Another lovely local walk for some of the Amersham Angels WI walking group on Sunday morning and one of our favourite shorter routes.
We met in Hervines Park and walked down to Old Amersham via the railway crossing point, past hedgerows and wheat fields starting to grow.
There was a coffee stop ☕️for the walkers and a water bowl stop for our four-legged friend 🐶at Seasons cafe in Old Amersham.
We noticed that the flower beds in the Memorial Gardens have been cleared and prepared for some new planting. Carole from Amersham in Bloom told me later that day that they would be planting salvias soon so look out for the new display over the coming weeks! ❤️🩷💜💚
The walk then continued back up the hill past the allotments and through the woods. A lovely start to Sunday with friends.
As AAWI is full, with a waiting list, we are unable to welcome visitors or guests to our meetings or events.

Amersham Angels WI are looking forward to seeing many of our members on Wednesday 3rd June for our next monthly meeting.
This month, the theme is ‘In sickness and in health’ and we are welcoming Briony Hudson as our speaker.

Briony is the Amersham museum Director and a pharmacy historian. Her talk will explore local stories of institutions and individuals in medical history, with a particular focus on the roles women have played.

Amersham Museum, located in Old Amersham, contains a wealth of interesting information about our local area and is a hub for local talks and exhibitions. See photographs below for current details.

As usual, drinks 🫖🥤 and refreshments 🧁🍰 will be served following the talk. This is an ideal, sociable opportunity to chat and get to know other members and to find out more about our varied sub-groups.

As Amersham Angels WI is full, with a long waiting list, we are unable to welcome guests or visitors to our meetings and events.

The regular AAWI coffee morning was well-attended yesterday. Although the weather is hot and sunny at the moment, members opted to keep cool sitting inside the Boot & Slipper! However, there are some very comfortable outdoor tables and seating areas in the garden of our local Amersham pub!
Members caught up over teas🫖, coffees☕️and soft drinks and there was the usual, sociable chat about many and varied topics. Delightful photos of grandchildren and family celebrations circulated, garden and craft tips were shared, along with ideas for visits and days out. As June approaches, many members excitedly shared forthcoming holiday plans too!✈️🏖️⛰️🧳🕶️
The coffee morning takes place every Thursday morning at the Boot & Slipper. We would encourage current and new members to come along as it’s a lovely, relaxed forum for getting to know other members. See the weekly diary for further details.
As Amersham Angels WI is full with a long waiting list, we are unable to accept guests or visitors at our meetings and events.

What a spectacularly lovely spring day for our AAWI gardening group visit to Jan’s fabulous garden in Chesham Bois.
A labour of love since the 1950’s house was purchased in 2019, the overgrown garden has undergone a huge transformation- starting with towering leylandii dug out and replaced with a laurel hedge (to the neighbours delight) and continuing with landscaping and new planting.
In such a short time the garden is now looking lovely and we enjoyed exploring the different areas and admiring the varied plants and shrubs. The greenhouse is a future project for Jan along with the raised veg beds. There was much to admire - some stunning peonies, a flourishing shady planted area and an asparagus bed. The patio was the perfect place to sit, admire the garden and enjoy delicious cakes (thanks to Jan and other “volunteer bakers”)🧁🍰☕️🫖
Jan displayed some garden plans, plant labels and photos of the changes in her garden which will hopefully inspire those starting their own gardening journey!
A great time was had by all - chatting in the sunshine, eating cake, sharing gardening tips and knowledge and planning our own garden improvements! 🌱🪴🌸Many thanks for sharing your garden with us Jan! 💚X

Amersham Angels WI Wednesday evening meeting had a musical theme as we welcomed Emily Yarrow to give us a personal performance.

Emily, a local Chesham resident, is a classically trained soprano renowned for her versatility and captivating performances across opera, musical theatre and classical genres. With an extensive repertoire, she has graced some of the most prestigious stages, performing nationally and internationally. Her powerful vocals have also been featured in major films, television and radio.

Emily was such a warm and engaging guest. She talked to us about her life in music, how she had begun singing at very young age, encouraged by her talented father, who is himself a renowned musician and composer of music and theme tunes for films and television.

Emily spoke candidly about the struggles of being a professional musician, the disheartening auditions, the day-to-day shows at care homes, weddings, funerals and the constant determination needed to keep your name at the forefront of agency lists. However it was abundantly clear why Emily loves her job-her face lit up when she shared the tremendous elation and sheer joy of performing for an audience, including a highlight moment singing the National Anthem at the Moto GP at Silverstone!
Emily and her partner Mark, who met while working on cruise ships, also work together within the Magic Circle and perform magic and illusion acts internationally.

Emily also sang and thrilled us with some beautiful arias from Carmen and Madame Butterfly and sang the poignant Ave Maria-stirring up many emotions.

To the surprise and delight of our ladies, our own talented member, Sharon Fleetwood-Law, featured in a duet with Emily, singing ‘The Letter Duet’ from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. The evening ended to rapturous applause!👏👏👏

Delicious refreshments were provided and served after the main feature by this month’s team-thanks to Bryony, Julie, Rebecca and Estelle! 🫖🍰☕️🧁This is always a lovely, sociable chance to chat, get to know other members and find out more about our various sub groups which really enhance enjoyment and participation of Amersham Angels WI.
As AAWI is full and we have a long waiting list, we are unfortunately unable to accept guests or visitors to our meetings or events.

Amersham Angels WI are always keen to get involved in various causes and events that support the local community and benefit local residents as well as our members.

From an idea proposed by Sally from our gardening group, some of our members have formed the Amersham Station gardening volunteers. 🚉

Noticing that the tubs and planters at Amersham Station were looking rather tired and neglected, we sought permission to try and improve these areas of the station. Happily, permission was granted so the group visited the station last week to assess the current situation and formulate a plan to rejuvenate the planters.

The members bring together experience on gardening matters but more importantly, enthusiasm! They are aiming to add colour to the platforms, increase opportunities for biodiversity💚, encourage pollinators 🐝 and hopefully bring a smile to the faces of the many commuters who pass through Amersham Station😀.

We hope you will look out for our updates about this exciting new initiative and enjoy seeing the progress over the next few months if you are in Amersham station! 💚
