On World Sickle Cell Day, we hear from Emmy, whose daughter lives with sickle cell disease and is supported by Roald Dahl Nurses.

With millions of people living with sickle cell worldwide, Emmy reflects on the importance of awareness and understanding, as well as the crucial role Roald Dahl Nurses have played in helping her family navigate this complex condition.

Emmy continues to take on running challenges to raise awareness of sickle cell disease and fundraise for . We’ll be sharing more of Emmy’s story and running journey as she takes on the Hackney Half Marathon next year!

Meet Ava, a two-year-old who is full of energy. Her mum, Katie, describes her as "completely full of beans."

Ava was prenatally diagnosed with Turner syndrome, a genetic condition and she also Dandy-Walker variant. Ava and her family are now supported by Kerry, a Roald Dahl Children with Medical Complexity Nurse Specialist.

For Ava and her family, daily life involves frequent hospital appointments, careful monitoring, and complex medication schedules. At times, this can feel overwhelming and worrying.

Kerry has made a remarkable difference to this experience. Her specialised and holistic approach to Ava's care has been a vital support to the family, bringing them some peace of mind in uncertain times.

We were delighted to see Roald Dahl Nurse Hannah, Danielle and her daughter Ruby featured in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Ruby has complex medical needs and is now receiving specialist support from Roald Dahl Nurse Hannah, who recently started in post.

Hannah said: “My role is to support families like Ruby and Danielle, who have complex medical needs and transition them over into adult services. While it is a huge step, it shouldn't feel like a lonely or uncertain one. We don’t want them to navigate it alone. My role is focused on joining them as they make this move, taking away the uncertainty that families often feel by working with adult teams and helping them see that the right care is in place."

Praising Hannah’s support in helping her feel “more understood”, Danielle said: “It might be an ‘I’ll sort that Danielle’ when I am worried about how something will change in community care. Or it might just be my realising that she gets completely what Ruby is feeling and is keen to communicate that to the new teams. But suddenly I feel more understood, that Ruby has this expert and friend by her side. Someone who is going to stay on this road with her for many years to come. And I am less afraid."
