It's going to be a VERY busy weekend at ANESFHS!

If family history is on your agenda this weekend, you're certainly not going to be short of things to do. Tomorrow alone (Saturday, 5 September) we have four events taking place in Aberdeen, Elgin and online!

Family History Fair – Aberdeen Town House

Family history societies, archives and heritage organisations from across Scotland will be gathering under one roof at the Town House in Aberdeen from 10 am – 4:30 pm. Come along, ask questions, discover new resources and be sure to stop by the ANESFHS stand to say hello!

Doors Open Day – ANESFHS Research Centre

Ever wondered what goes on inside our Research Centre at 158 King Street, Aberdeen? This is your chance to come in, have a look around and discover the resources available for researching your family history. If you can't make it on Saturday, we'll be opening our doors again on Sunday 6 September from 10 am – 4 pm.

Moray/Banff Group – Bring Along a Brick Wall

Got a research problem that just won't budge? Bring it along to Elgin Library and put a few heads together. A fresh pair of eyes might be just what you need! Full details here: https://anesfhs.org/meetings-events/moray-banff-meetings/event/522-mbf2026sep

Australia & New Zealand Group – Famous or Infamous Scots
Our Australia & New Zealand members will also be meeting online to share their research into ancestors who were famous (however you choose to define it!) or infamous. More info here: https://anesfhs.org/meetings-events/australia-newzealand-group-meetings/event/525-aus2026sep

✨ St Andrew’s Cathedral – A Sanctuary Steeped in History ✨

đź“… Doors Open Day: 5th & 6th September
🕙 10am – 4pm
📍 28 King Street, AB24 5AX

Step into the quiet beauty of St Andrew’s Cathedral, a place where Aberdeen’s story meets global history. Founded in 1817, this remarkable building became the birthplace of the Episcopal Church in the United States - and, by extension, the wider Anglican Communion. Few places in Scotland hold such a profound international connection.

Inside, the Cathedral is a masterpiece of early 19th century Scottish Gothic Revival architecture. Its tall lancet windows, elegant proportions, and atmospheric interior reflect the confidence and creativity of the growing Episcopal community in Aberdeen. Every corner carries the imprint of generations who worshipped, served, and shaped civic life in the city.

Across the Doors Open Day weekend, visitors can enjoy:

🎶 Cathedral @ Noon A gentle programme of music and reflection.
🏛️ Guided tours Available on request for those who want to delve deeper into the Cathedral’s heritage.
🙏 Festival Eucharist (streamed online) A chance to experience the Cathedral’s worship tradition from wherever you are.
Whether you come for history, architecture, music, or a moment of stillness, St Andrew’s Cathedral offers an unforgettable experience at the heart of King Street.

✨ Open both days, 10am - 4pm - all welcome.
