Leading Together: A Weekend of Learning and Fellowship

Twenty three volunteers from Aberdeen & Shetland came together at the Sir Arthur Grant Centre in Monymusk for a weekend of training, development and fellowship, with a further five day visitors joining us throughout the weekend.

Led by Denise Spence and Helen Humphreys, our training focused on leadership. We explored inspiring women from Aberdeen & Shetland and considered what makes a great leader. We then reflected on our own leadership styles, how to work effectively as a team, and how to take these skills back to our units to empower girls to take increasing ownership of their programme.

Saturday offered the opportunity to get outdoors with an optional walk led by our Walking Adviser, Jen Bruce. In the evening, we put our knowledge to the test in a House of Games-inspired session. Richard Osman may have been otherwise engaged, but Denise and Helen certainly brought out the competitive spirit in our teams!

We rounded off the evening with a campfire in the fantastic fire hut on site, followed by sparklers to mark the Halloween and Bonfire Night season.

On Sunday, some volunteers joined the Girlguiding Scotland Grow online event, while others continued exploring how we can involve girls more meaningfully in activities and programme planning.

A huge thank you to Denise, Helen, Fiona, Jen and everyone who helped make the weekend happen. And, of course, thank you to all our participants for their enthusiasm, willingness to learn and commitment to working together as a team.

Great leadership starts with learning together, supporting one another and empowering the next generation of volunteers.

This Halloween earn interest badges at home by taking on these spooky challenges!

From fairy tales to myths and legends, getting lost in a story is a wonderful way to spend an autumn evening. And being in the dark around a cosy campfire makes everything feel more magical. Rainbows can earn their storyteller badge by sharing their most imaginative and spooky stories.

Brownies could have a go at building their own bat box towards gaining their animal helper badge.

Get into the seasonal spirit by mixing up some colourful magic potions - in other words, designing your own Halloween mocktail. For Guides, this is a fun way to earn their mixology badge.

Rangers can explore the idea of costume with the costumes interest badge.

Women and Girls in Sport Week – Female Athlete Health

As part of Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2026 we are delighted to be hosting Female Athlete Health Workshops with Emily Divine. These sessions will explore how greater awareness and understanding can help female sports people, coaches, volunteers and parents to better support female participants in sport. Topics will include menstrual health and wellbeing, recognising potential warning signs, supporting athletes effectively, and creating positive sporting environments where women and girls feel comfortable, understood and empowered.

A huge congratulations to Zahra and her Drops of Action challenge!

We’re delighted to share that all 200 badges for Drops of Action, created by Zahra, a Guide leader in Aberdeen & Shetland, have now sold out through the depot!

Zahra developed the challenge following her participation in the Helen Storrow Seminar at Our Chalet in Switzerland, where she explored sustainability, water conservation and how we can take action to protect our planet.

The challenge inspired units to think about the importance of water and the small changes we can all make to make a difference. And the badge was rather special too – a sparkly little drop of water!

It’s fantastic to see so many units getting involved and taking action to protect our environment. Well done, Zahra, for turning an international guiding experience into an opportunity for girls across the country to make a difference!

Wee Act Big Impact – 1st Whiteness and Weisdale Brownies

Some Shetland Brownies have been spreading kindness in their local community as part of Wee Act Big Impact, Girlguiding Scotland’s youth community action project!

The girls visited Wastview Care Home to spend time with the residents, singing songs, making colourful bunting to brighten up the room and creating cards to give to the residents. They also rolled up their sleeves to help serve tea and cake, making it a lovely afternoon for everyone involved.

Girlguiding Scotland launched Wee Act Big Impact to encourage young members to give back to their local communities through a week of action, running from 5–11 October and culminating on International Day of the Girl. Over 3,000 girls across Scotland took part by volunteering, fundraising and raising awareness of the issues and causes that matter to them.

We’re so proud of our Brownies for showing how small acts of kindness can make a big impact!
