Gathimba Edwards Foundation

Gathimba Edwards Foundation Building a brighter future and improving the quality of life for children and their families in Kenya and north-east Scotland.

Our approach to tackling the challenges which hold back the communities we serve is centred around the 3 pillars of Education, Shelter and Wellbeing. The nature of support under each pillar varies in each country according to need. Whether it's public school fees, specialist equipment, a new house or a ramp to help you access the door you already have, but feel is closed to you - along with food o

r farming assistance, or therapies - we strive to deliver maximum impact across the entire GEF community. We are a small charity, with little overheads, making a big difference. We pride ourselves on providing a clear and transparent demonstration of the ground level impact that the support entrusted to us enables us to achieve. When Craig Smallbone visited a one-roomed dwelling in Kenya inhabited by an entire family, he knew he had to do something to help them build a brighter future. 😇

It was March 2024, and , our Operations Manager in the town of Iten, was showing a group of visitors, including Craig, around some GEF projects in the area.

Since then Craig has gone on to support GEF through various ways and witnessed first hand the impact his donations and fundraising has had on the community. 🧡🙏

✨Supporter Spotlight ✨

This month we’re shining a light on Chimp Management, a company dedicated to helping people understand and manage their minds, enhance performance, and achieve a better quality of life.

GEF was first introduced to the Chimp Management team when one of their mentors, Adam Wright, joined 28 volunteers in Kenya in 2018 to help build safe homes for families in desperate need. ✈️

Since them, both Adam and Chimp Management as a company have sponsored 2 Kenyan children’s education to the end of secondary school through our Sponsor A Child scholarship program. 📚 They have since gone on to sponsor two more children as they work towards their goal of completing school. Beyond covering educational costs, they have built meaningful relationships through regular communication, offering encouragement and hope for the future.

More recently, the Chimp Management team supported GEF in a different but equally valuable way. Through a wellness workshop based on The Chimp Model, developed by Prof. Steve Peters, our team explored practical techniques to support psychological wellbeing and reduce burnout. It was an incredibly insightful session, and we are so grateful for their generosity and expertise. 👥

Partnerships like this remind us that there are many ways businesses can support charities — from sharing professional expertise and supporting staff wellbeing, to volunteering, fundraising, and sponsoring life-changing projects. At the same time, regular monthly sponsorships such as our Sponsor A Child programme or Support Children in north-east Scotland programme are vital to our fundraising and create lasting impact for children and communities year after year.

Thank you to Chimp Management for standing alongside GEF in so many meaningful ways. 🧡

We are excited to share we have launched a new initiative to meet growing demand for the support they provide to families with a disabled child in North-east Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We are inviting individuals and businesses to become monthly sponsors to help deliver consistent, sustained support to children who need it most. While in Kenya each sponsor is directly linked to a specific child, in Scotland the contributions will be pooled to meet the varied and often specialist needs of local children and families.

While we suggest four monthly support levels, any contribution - whether below, between or above these amounts - is hugely appreciated and will help us support more children and families. 🥰

It was an honour for our team in Kenya to welcome Andy and Maggie Patience, and their son Jordan, once again and show them around the various projects and homes supported through their fundraising.

This visit felt especially emotional, as they remembered their son, Lewis, who sadly passed away last year. Over 10 days there was laughter, tears, love, and reflection shared among their extended family, including Lewis' partner Vicky, who travelled from Scotland to see firsthand how the £17,000 raised in Lewis’s memory has been used to provide four families with safe new homes.

We cannot thank them enough for entrusting us with such an important and deeply personal task.

James, our Karatina Operations Manager, shared:
“It was truly a blessing to spend this time together and reconnect with a family who carries Lewis’s memory so dearly. Seeing everyone again brought so much joy and love. We are deeply grateful for your kindness, hospitality, and the unity you continue to show. May you be abundantly blessed.”

David, our Iten Operations Manager, added:
“They were some of the best guests I have ever hosted. It was understandably very emotional at times, especially seeing the homes built in memory of Lewis. We were able to visit twelve families, and Andy, Maggie, and the group generously provided food packages to each of them. Their minister, Rev Andrea, offered words of encouragement and prayers while blessing the homes, a tradition here in Kenya, and we shared many lovely meals together.”

Lewis’s memory now lives on not only in the hearts of his family and friends, but also in the lives of the families whose futures have been changed through this incredible act of love and generosity.

Thank you, Andy, Maggie, and the entire Patience family, for allowing something so heartbreaking to become something that brings hope to others. 🧡
