𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲:𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚

For World Oceans Day, yesterday, we celebrated our Pacific waters and the incredible marine life we protect. Today, we turn to the powerful forces that shaped our islands : the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Our Pacific home sits on the most seismically active zone on Earth. Over 450 active volcanoes line the Ring of Fire, and Pacific Island nations: 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚, 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐮, 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐙𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 - sit directly on it.

From Tonga's Hunga Tonga eruption in 2022, to Vanuatu's Mount Yasur that has been erupting non-stop for over 250 years, to Solomon Islands' underwater volcano Kavachi that creates and destroys islands : 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮.

📍Our ocean feeds us, connects us, and carries our ancestors' stories across the waves. But beneath its surface lies a force that has shaped every island we call home. The same Pacific that gives us life also holds the power to shake our foundations.

𝗬𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. Generation after generation, our people have lived alongside these forces - not in ignorance, but in awareness. We read the ocean. We listen to the land. We do not take these dangers lightly.

For us, the youth of the Pacific, this day is more than just a celebration; it's a reaffirmation of our sacred, unbreakable bond with our 𝐌𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐢ā𝐤𝐞𝐚 - the vast, life-giving Pacific Ocean.

📍Our ocean is not just water; it is our ancestor, our provider, our highway, and the very heart of our identity. It teems with incredible life, from the smallest coral polyp to the largest whale, each playing a vital role in the health of our blue home. This World Oceans Day, we celebrate the breathtaking biodiversity and the profound cultural connections that make our Pacific truly unique.

At the 2026 Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting in Suva, Fiji, our youth leaders stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the women who lead our region — embodying the true spirit of intergenerational leadership.

𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟑 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 | 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥, 𝐒𝐮𝐯𝐚

Our journey began at 7am with a Ministerial breakfast hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General. Our youth leaders were welcomed to the table — and we engaged.

Throughout the day, our two representatives joined the women Ministers during their closed Ministerial Retreat, offering insights grounded in the realities facing Pacific youth today. We spoke to the urgent need for stewardship that spans generations — honouring the wisdom of our elders while channelling the innovative, resilient energy of our young people.

𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟒 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 | 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦, 𝐒𝐮𝐯𝐚

The momentum deepened...!! Alongside our partners at PIFS and Pacific Girl, we coordinated a dynamic intergenerational dialogue between youth leaders and Ministers. This was not just a conversation — it was a call to action.

Moderated by Ms Frances Namoumou of the Pacific Conference of Churches, youths presented our clear, urgent calls to action, advocating for the perspectives of young people, women, and vulnerable communities to be woven into the very fabric of the outcomes statement our women leaders finalized.

Young women and girls remain a key focus of the Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders meeting because barriers to leadership, economic participation, health services, and protection from gender-based violence continue to limit opportunities across the region.

Leaders have emphasised that including young women in decision-making is essential for achieving gender equality and ensuring no one is left behind in the Blue Pacific.

Pacific Youth Council (PYC), in partnership with the United Nations Pacific Inter-Agency Working Group on Adolescents and Youth (IAWGAY)and Pasifika Communities University (PCU), officially launched Talanoa 1 of our three-part Pre-COP31 Pacific Youth Talanoa Series in Nasese, Suva!

🌿 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆

We began our sacred Talanoa space with powerful words of guidance from Reverend Professor Upolu Luma Vaai, the PCU Manu Folau (Vice-Chancellor). He reminded our young leaders of a fundamental truth: 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮, 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚, 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙨.

▪️𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝: Youths were urged to ground their advocacy in the lived realities of their own communities, recognizing that our greatest assets lie within ourselves and the unstoppable power of our youth collective.

▪️𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬: True climate resilience requires bridging science and spirituality, creating a more holistic and complete pathway toward sustainable development.

▪️𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦: We must reclaim and strengthen intergenerational knowledge, ensuring that the culture and lived experiences of our ancestors continue to guide our modern climate responses.

🗺️𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝘽𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘: 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

📍In the afternoon, the session was facilitated by PYC Coordinator Ms. Miliana Iga. The focus shifted to translating our values into strategic action.

▪️𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Participants analyzed and critiqued the climate priorities emerging from the 2025 Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM55) held in the Solomon Islands, and also recent discussions at the Pacific Climate Justice and Sea-Level Rise week, identifying how youth-led initiatives actively contribute to collective regional goals.

▪️𝐏𝐘𝐃𝐅 𝐈𝐈 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: Youths mapped success stories, community challenges, and future visions under the Pacific Youth Development Framework (PYDF II) thematic areas: Climate Change, Oceans and Natural Environment.

▪️𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: Through active sharing between our physical and virtual participants, we identified existing gaps in community to national level implementation and envisioned what true, youth-led climate success looks like.

It’s been a busy and productive 5 months at your Pacific Youth Council and we are now embarking mid-2026😱

From strengthening our governance systems and Secretariat to advancing regional youth engagement and preparing key institutional documents.........a lot has been happening behind the scenes as we continue working towards a stronger and more sustainable PYC. 🌊🤝🏽

We’re also looking forward to several important regional engagements over the coming weeks, while opening space for Assembly comments on the PYC Institutional Strengthening Package.

What does a just and resilient climate future look like through your eyes?

The Pacific Youth Talanoa Series is your opportunity to connect, learn, and raise your voice alongside young people from across the Pacific and our diaspora communities as we journey towards COP31 and beyond.

Through three interactive Talanoa sessions from June to August, participants will:
🤝 Connect with Pacific youth leaders and changemakers
📚 Strengthen skills and climate knowledge
🗣️ Share perspectives and shape collective priorities
🌱 Influence climate conversations and decision-making spaces

This Pacific youth-led initiative is co-designed and co-led by the United Nations UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji and the Pacific Youth Council in partnership with CROP agencies and regional organisations.

What an incredible week at the 2050 Regional Convening in Suva! The Pacific Youth Council (PYC) through the PRNGO Alliance, participated alongside national planners, and statisticians, advocating for a future where youth are not just beneficiaries, but architects of the Blue Pacific Continent.

🎙🗣Our journey this week, began with a powerful keynote address by Mr. Ilaisa Williams, of the Youth Assemblies of Fiji Navua, a member of the National Youth Council of FIji. Ilaisa set a visionary tone for intergenerational partnership. 📍It means youth priorities will be intentionally integrated into regional planning, from decision-making to implementation, ensuring that our demographic dividend is truly recognized and invested in.

🟦As the Convening drew to a close, PYC Coordinator, Ms. Miliana Iga, delivered a compelling closing address. She expressed immense gratitude for the invaluable insights gained from our partners throughout the week, which will be instrumental as PYC finalizes its strategic plan and resource mobilization strategy. This engagement also paves the way towards the exciting launch of the Pacific Youth Development Framework II.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to a Blue Pacific that is truly inclusive and data-informed. From ensuring that our statistics reflect the lived realities of our marginalized communities to supporting the self-determination and identity of our brothers and sisters across the region, our planning must be as vast and deep as the ocean itself ❤️
