Who tells our stories? And why does it matter?
In this episode of Migrants Stories Retold, Minetu speaks about the importance of preserving Sahrawi history, culture, and traditions as another form of fight for freedom.
She criticizes the lack of attention Western Sahara receives in Germany. Its history can not be reduced to Spain´s last colony or rewritten as though Western Sahara had always been Moroccan. As she points out, the UN still recognises Western Sahara as a territory awaiting decolonisation.
She shares her own story to break the media silence surrounding the Sahrawi cause, wherever she can, wherever she is asked to, and wherever she happens to be.
“Migrants Stories Retold“ is a documentary series by Mediterranea Berlin e.V. that follows migrant activists and migrant-led organisations across Berlin. The project is funded by the European Solidarity Corps 2026. Each episode highlights a different struggle, a different organisation, and a different approach to organising.
Rather than presenting migration as a topic for debate, the series invites viewers to learn from the knowledge, political practices, and day-to-day organising work of migrant communities. It is a call to listen and to recognise the diverse ways in which migrant-led initiatives and organisations shape the city of Berlin.
