NAAS is a network of non-governmental cinema spaces that champions innovation in cinema exhibition in the Arabic-speaking region.

شبكة الشاشات العربية البديلة «ناس» هي شبكة تضم شاشات ونوادي سينما عربية غير حكومية ذات رؤى برمجية تعتمد على التفاعل المباشر مع الجمهور. تسعى «ناس» من خلال عملها إلى توسيع نطاق الأفلام المتاحة للجمهور العربي وخلق حوار حول السينما وتشجيع وجود أنماط متعددة لتجربة المشاهدة الجماعية للأفلام. يلتزم أعضاء «ناس» بتقديم برامج أفلام منتظمة، ويلتزمون باتجاه الشبكة لتغيير ديناميات عرض ومشاهدة الأفلام في المن

تنظَم «ناس» سلسلة لقاءات وبرامج أفلام متداولة وورش إقليميَة لكوكبتها النامية من الفضاءات السينمائية الغير حكوميَة. و هي جمعية مسجلة في بيروت تمارس عملها اقليمياً بالتعاون مع أعضاء الشبكة في البلدان العربية المختلفة.

تضم الشبكة ٢٣ مشترك في ١٠ بلدان:

١٦ مشتركين أساسيين: مساحات سينما ونوادي للأفلام بديلة ومراكز ثقافية
٧ مشتركين فرعيين: قاعات ومبادرات في الفضاء العام وموقع إلكتروني للنقد السينمائي وشبكات سينمائية أخرى

NAAS is a network that champions innovation in cinema exhibition in the Arabic-speaking region. Through its work, NAAS aims to broaden the scope of films available to the Arab public and encourage dialogue around cinema and its history with the hopes of tapping into the potential presented by the collective experience of watching film in a public setting. We support initiatives that attempt through their programming, events, space, outreach, and operation to support a vibrant and sustainable cinema culture with the aim of developing audiences engaging with film. Through the yearly organization of regional encounters, film touring programs and workshops, NAAS provides support to its growing constellation of non-governmental cinema spaces. The network counts 23 members and affiliates in 10 countries:
- 16 core members: cinemas, cine-clubs, and cultural centers
- 7 affiliate members: media and publishing platforms, educational initiatives, and other networks

The network’s members are based in 10 Arab countries: Algeria - Egypt - Iraq - Lebanon - Morocco - Palestine - Sudan - Tunisia - United Arab Emirates - Yemen

What goes into the making of a dossier? 🎞️

We sat down with the editors of Dossier 5, Alia Ayman and Nour El Safoury, to try to answer that question.
We talked about the thinking behind the dossier; the Cairo meeting that sparked it, the possibilities and limitations of terms like “the Global South,” and the real constraints of funding, language, and cross-regional film networks.

As imperialist powers continue escalating their aggression on our people, we’ve been hesitant to promote our latest Malaffat dossier. Our network spans over Sudan, Palestine, and Lebanon, so we’re no strangers to the ineffable grief that makes everything else seem trivial.

And while exhaustion and extensive periods of stillness are valid, even necessary consequences in the face of the unrelenting depravity we are witnessing, we refuse to surrender to permanent despair and erasure.
So, despite the painful absurdity of our current reality, we resume our work.

Ifdal Elsaket’s contribution comes as a reminder that even under conditions of imperial violence, filmmakers and cultural workers across the Global South have historically forged enduring networks of exchange and solidarity.

Today, we highlight this powerful contribution to dossier 5 by .e, which maps out the rich history of South-South film circulation, dating back to the 1950s.

Elsaket demonstrates how these routes were traveled by filmmakers and programmers decades before our Global South Meeting at , exploring why they were paved over, and what it would take to keep the road open this time.

This week’s highlight from Malaffat’s dossier 5 ✨

As if building on ’s question that we shared recently, “Is there still a world to be won?”, offers a reframe: “The world is not just ours to win—it is ours to build.”

She pulls us back to the third Afro-Asian Film Festival, held in Jakarta in 1964, reminding us that world-building is slow, patient work. That boycotts are not just moral positions but organizational tactics. And that decolonization, when it is more than a metaphor, addresses concrete conditions and enables material transformation.

This text was commissioned and written before the current unfolding of events. And as the region navigates another wave of relentless violence, grief, and –obligatory– resilience, the questions Nour poses take on a sharper, though more painful, urgency.

She traces how the certainties of the era have given way to uncertainty today, reflecting on what it means to organize under late capitalism, where alternatives are often reabsorbed as commodities.

The contribution also invites us to think about terminologies, about the possibilities and the dangers of defining an “us” and a “them”, sitting with the tension of finding collective ground in an ever more fragmented world.

Finally, after months of conceptualizing, discussing, and writing (a lot), we’re thrilled to bring you this new Dossier. ✨

“Cinema of the Global South – Reflections on Zawya’s Film Programmers’ Meeting” is a special bilingual publication born from a live event of the same name that took place at last June. Over three days, filmmakers, programmers, and researchers from across the Global South gathered in Cairo to reflect on programming practices and the role of cinema in shaping shared cultural memory.

It was a generative meeting, one which refused to end. Conversations spilled over. Friendships began. And the need to extend the room beyond June, beyond Cairo became its own call.

So Dossier 5 became an afterword, a continuation, and an opening all at once. It gathers reflections from four contributors who were inside that room ( , , .e , and ), edited by and who also curated the event itself.

We will delve into each contribution here over the coming weeks, but the full dossier is already available to read on Malaffat (link in bio). As part of this community, you also carry this conversation forward, and we would love to read your own reflections in the comments!

New on Malaffat: In this contribution, editor and filmmaker Khalid Shamis draws a parallel between the act of editing and the diasporic experience. Arguing that both are processes of continual becoming, he explores the edit room as a “third space” where fragments of self, lineage, and history can be rearranged and reinterpreted.

Shamis is a London-born, Libyan–South African documentary director, producer, and editor with over 25 years of experience working across Africa, the Middle East, and the UK.
