It has been one week since the shocking revelations that led to the total capitulation of the Province and reinstatement of the Board of Trustees. The GVTA is waiting for a response to President Carolyn Howe's May 26 letter to the Premier, calling for an investigation into wrongdoing and removal of those involved.

Democracy, waste, and the anatomy of a completely preventable fiasco in Victoria, British Columbia's education system

It's been almost a week, and the GVTA is still waiting for accountabilty from the Ministry of Education and Childcare, who has spent over $400,000 on a bungled move to fire the locally elected Greater Victoria School Board. Including legal fees, this is likely to be close to $1 million.

Meanwhile, teachers see the impacts of underfunding every day in our classrooms.
* Students without assistance because we don’t have enough education assistants
* Waiting for classroom cleaning because daytime custodians have been cut
* Not enough laptops for all students
* Cuts to our music classes which are only running next year through fundraising
* Teachers overwhelmed because there is no funding for required extra meetings, writing reports, and preparing specialized instruction for students
* Cuts to specialized learning support and careers programs

Where would you prioritize education dollars?

Saving our music and career programs
Hiring more Education Assistants
Restoring all daytime custodians
Reducing class sizes
Or
Legal fees and Costs for Ministry mismanagement?

When will we hear a REAL statement from the Premier on responsibility?

A remarkable decision yesterday from the Province and Attorney General. More certainly to come from this debacle, but it is good to see democratic principles reaffirmed.
We look forward to a fulsome independent investigation into any potential wrongdoing by the Ministry and Victoria Police Department.
