Big news from the Spring Economic Update, and it’s a major win for SMART members!

On the second day of Canada's Building Trades Unions conference, themed “Our Future is Union Made,” this announcement couldn’t be more fitting.

The federal government is investing $6 billion over the next five years to recruit, train, and hire up to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers by 2030.

Here’s what that means for us:

✔️ Stronger apprenticeship support – wage subsidies for employers to hire and train apprentices
✔️ More money in workers’ pockets – income top-ups while you learn
✔️ One-time bonus for getting certified in a Red Seal trade
✔️ Better mobility support – increased tax deductions for travel and relocation costs

The message is clear: Skilled trades are essential, and union workers are leading the charge

Today, on the Day of Mourning, SMART Canada remembers and honours the workers who have lost their lives or been injured on the job.

We mourn the dead, fight for the living.

SMART Canada is committed to protecting our members rights and ensuring safe, healthy working environments for everyone. Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of the day.

Today and every day, we stand united in remembrance, reflection, and action to prevent future tragedies.

Our members are speaking out about the value of CBAs: “Labour agreement projects are special because they provide the space for women and other visible minority trades workers to gain experience.... There are easily two to three times more local trades women on this job than I’ve ever seen on any other job I’ve worked.”
