Along with this great shot, Carlyanne shared her story about her love of fishing when she entered last year's photo contest: "Almost five years ago, I was struggling to find the elusive work-life balance. After a particularly difficult day, I called my dad who has been a fisherman for more years than I have been alive and he said, “Out of your office and into mine”. This kicked off a deep love and passion for fishing, and what started as one day of fishing on a Friday with my dad turned into a weekly fly-fishing Friday, and it expanded into a fly-fishing Monday, Wednesday, sometimes Thursday, even a Sunday. We also share our special fly-fishing Fridays with my kids. These are memories that will last a lifetime."

When the shallow or shoal areas of a lake cool down enough, it is more comfortable for fish to forage for longer periods of time and, in preparation for winter, feed even more aggressively as the temperatures continue to drop. At this time of year, trout are feeding on insects’ immature nymphal or larval stages, along with other invertebrates (like leeches, freshwater shrimp, water boatman, and backswimmers).

Last year, we stocked nearly 1.5 million kokanee into over 60 lakes. This is where the process begins. Each September, staff set up creek traps at a handful of sites and collect eggs and milt from spawning wild kokanee. These eggs are transferred back to our hatcheries and reared over the winter. The following spring, kokanee fry are released into select lakes. With a few years of growth behind them, they're ready for anglers to catch!

We were recently able to access the Summerland Trout hatchery and a few staff members returned to work today. We are pleased to confirm that our hatchery buildings are safe. The hatchery remains closed to the public due to the current fire situation in the area. Our thoughts are with everyone affected and we thank the crews working hard to protect the community and keep everyone safe.
