When Rosalie (Rosie) was born, her parents had no idea the journey that lay ahead. Within days, their newborn was airlifted to SickKids in Toronto, where she was diagnosed with a single ventricle heart defect and was placed on the transplant list at just ten days old.
On the other side of that wait was a family whose world had just shattered. Kristin and Alex Chen had lost their six-week-old daughter Ailah to sudden infant death syndrome. In the depths of unimaginable grief, they made the profound and selfless decision to donate her organs, so that another child might live.
On June 26, 2018, Ailah's heart was given to Rosie. Two families, once strangers, forever connected by one tiny heart.
The David Foster Foundation was honoured to support Rosie's family throughout her journey, and later, to bring both families together for an emotional reunion. Kristin listened to Rosie's heart through a stethoscope. The Chens gave Rosie's family the pink blanket that had covered Ailah in her final moments. In return, they received a stuffed rabbit with an audio recording of Rosie's heartbeat - Ailah's heart, still beating.
