Meet James 💜

On January 22, 2021, Heather and Steve welcomed their baby boy James into the world. Nine days later, everything changed, and a frantic 911 call led to an airlift to BC Children's Hospital, where James was diagnosed with two rare, life-threatening heart conditions with no cure.

What followed was one of the most harrowing journeys a family can face. In August 2021, during an emergency transfer to a hospital in Edmonton, James went into cardiac arrest twice. He arrived on ECMO and received 48 minutes of chest compressions. Miraculously, his brain function was intact.

For eight months, the family lived away from home, navigating hospital life and the heartbreak of COVID restrictions. Just days after his first birthday, James received his first heart transplant, and for the first time in his life, he began to truly thrive.

But in December 2022, James was diagnosed with chronic rejection of his transplanted heart and was relisted. After two and a half more years of waiting and hope, James received his second heart transplant in September 2025 and came home to Peachland just before Halloween.

Last month, we were deeply honoured to welcome the Lazeski family to our 40th Anniversary Gala. Having them in the room as a reminder of why this work matters was one of the most meaningful moments of the evening.

Today, James is a curious, joyful little boy preparing for kindergarten. He has captured the hearts of everyone who knows him, and we are so grateful to know his.

In July 2023, Kaitlynn was 20 weeks pregnant when a routine detour changed everything. While visiting family in Lethbridge, a specialist expressed serious concerns about her 15-month-old daughter Scarlett's breathing and weight, and directed them to the emergency room immediately.

Scarlett was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy and listed for a heart transplant at just 17 months old. In an instant, Kaitlynn and her husband Zack left their jobs to be in Edmonton for Scarlett's care, all while managing the needs of their son Isaac and preparing for the arrival of a new baby.

In February 2024, the call came, and there was a heart available for Scarlett. The surgery was a success. The David Foster Foundation provided financial support during Scarlett's recovery and the follow-up appointments, allowing the family to focus entirely on healing together.

Today, Scarlett is a strong and resilient little girl who astounds everyone she meets, and she has absolutely no interest in slowing down. 💙

When Jack's parents found out they were having a boy, they chose the name Jack because in every great story, Jack is the hero. They had no idea just how true that would become.

Just days after birth, Jack was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. His first surgery was unsuccessful, and he was immediately placed on the transplant list. What followed was a series of heartbreaking decisions, including his mother's choice to become his living liver donor, knowing it meant being separated from her son during his recovery.

On February 15, 2018, the transplant took place. While his mother recovered across town, his father Jayson held everything together. With the support from the David Foster Foundation, Jayson was able to remain by Jack's side throughout, bringing the family immeasurable reassurance during one of the hardest seasons of their lives.

Today, Jack is thriving. Resilient, courageous, and selfless, he is every bit the hero his parents always knew he would be.

Forty years ago, a phone call from his mother changed everything.

David Foster sat with a sick little girl in a Los Angeles hospital, asked what she needed most in the world, and went and got it. Not a miracle. Not medicine. Just her sister, flown in from Victoria on a ticket David quietly paid for. That one moment of simple, human kindness became the foundation that has since walked alongside more than 1,600 Canadian families.

Over the past 40 years, the David Foster Foundation has had the profound honour of walking alongside more than 1,600 families through one of the most challenging journeys of their lives. Families who left everything familiar behind, held onto hope through the hardest moments, and trusted us to help carry some of the weight.

Their strength is the reason we do this work. And thanks to our donors, supporters, and community, we've been able to be there for every one of those families.

Today, we'll come together to celebrate a milestone that is about so much more than a number. Saturday evening's free concert at the Inner Harbour has been made entirely possible through the generosity of our incredible sponsors. Every donation from the gala goes directly into a restricted fund used solely to support the children and families navigating a major organ transplant. That is a commitment we are deeply proud of.

🚧 The David Foster & Friends Concert is happening this weekend, and we want to make sure your journey to the Inner Harbour is as smooth as possible.

To support event operations and ensure a safe experience for everyone, temporary road closures will be in place around the Inner Harbour.

From 5:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7 to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, Belleville Street between Menzies Street and Government Street will be closed.

On Saturday, August 8, starting from 4:00 p.m, additional closures will be in effect along Belleville Street through Douglas Street and on Government Street between Humboldt Street and Superior Street.

Please allow extra travel time and consider alternatives such as BC Transit or cycling to help reduce congestion and make your experience as smooth as possible.

Only one week left until we gather together for a milestone that means the world to our foundation.

Forty years of families who trusted us with their most vulnerable moments. Forty years of donors and supporters who showed up with open hearts. Forty years of hope made possible by a community that refused to look away.

We are deeply grateful for every single person who has been part of this journey, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you in Victoria on August 7 & 8.
