The Greater Victoria Public Library is looking for individuals to join their new Accessibility Advisory Committee, particularly those with lived experiences around having a disability! Check out the attached post for more details, including how to apply!

GVPL is recruiting members for its new Accessibility Advisory Committee. Applications are open until September 30.

The Committee will help identify and address barriers to accessibility so that library services, spaces, and experiences are welcoming and accessible for everyone.

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, particularly those with lived experience of disability or knowledge in accessibility.

📚 Author Talk at Camas Books & Infoshop

Join Phil Nealy as he discusses his new autobiography, I Won't Stand for This! Embracing My Disability to Empower Others.

After sustaining a spinal cord injury that resulted in quadriplegia, Phil shares his journey of rehabilitation, self-advocacy, and building a full and independent life. Rather than focusing on disability as tragedy or inspiration, he challenges common assumptions about ability, productivity, and worth while highlighting resilience, dignity, community, and the importance of removing barriers.

Written with Kyle Hawke, this thoughtful memoir offers an honest perspective grounded in lived experience.

We’re thrilled to welcome our guest speaker Dan Ashworth, disability advocate, VDRC volunteer, and founder of Access in Excess! Dan will talk about his experiences attending concerts, festivals and other public events as a person who uses mobility equipment to move around, as well as the work that his project, Access in Excess, has done to make such events more accessible to everyone!

ASL interpretation and live transcript will be provided.

Dan Ashworth’s Bio

Dan (he/him) is an accessibility agitator at heart, disability advocate, musician, and a baker of buns along with other treats. He thoroughly enjoys going to gigs and festivals, and with his project, Access in Excess, works to make those spaces more inclusive. Dan has been a part of the Festival and Event Accessibility Project run by Independent Living Canada and previously was a Xenia Concerts board member. He is also a vocalist/songwriter and was in two punk/hardcore bands, one of which focused on accessibility and civil rights.

Access In Excess is a project that strives to create more inclusive and accessible music experiences for people to enjoy. Our mission is to grow a community where we can form ideas, provide resources, and share people's lived knowledge of disability to transform music events. Our goal is to increase representation, uplift, and empower disabled people in the music community, especially those who are most marginalized.

Interested in playing some fun video games with friends? Wa-hoo!

Next Tuesday, September 1st, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm, we're hosting an Accessible Gaming Hangout! We'll be featuring a variety of Nintendo Switch games that can be played with two or more players! Many of these games also have some really neat accessibility features!

The game line-up includes:
-Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: classic racing fun for up to four players, with steering wheel controllers!
-The Vale: Shadow of the Crown: an immersive role-playing game that is entirely
played through audio cues, ideal for people who are blind!
-Super Mario Party: a competitive multiplayer with a large collection of fun mini games!
-Nintendo Switch Sports: a variety of sports, including bowling, basketball and more, with simple motion controls

We're pleased to welcome Milo from CFUV 101.9 FM to the Victoria Disability Resource Centre for an upcoming community discussion on accessibility in live music, nightlife, and rave culture.

Join us on Friday, August 14, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in our boardroom for a conversation about rave culture, music, dance, community, and accessibility at live shows and nightlife. The session will begin with a group discussion followed by an interactive activity.
