The VDRC will be participating in the first Treat Accessibly Halloween Village, a family friendly event designed to create a welcoming and accessible Halloween experience that is accessible and inclusive for everyone!

The event, hosted by Andy McGhee REALTOR, is being held on Saturday, October 31st from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in the Mayfair Shopping Centre parking lot in front of H Mart.

We will be operating one of around 30 accessible stations offering candy and other treats. Costumes are totally optional and you do not need to say "trick or treat" in order to get a treat! Bring your treat bag and dress for the weather!

In addition, the event will have a live DJ, kid's entertainment, free coffee and hot chocolate, a pet costume contest and more Halloween fun!

The forum will focus on issues that have a significant impact on people with disabilities, including PWD disability assistance rates, accessible and affordable housing, and access to health care. Candidates will be asked questions on these topics and given an opportunity to share what they and their parties would do to address them.

Stitching Disabled Realms is a new fibre arts based book that revolves around the theme of "our disabled homes." Join the online book launch this Sunday, October 18th and hear from the artists as they talk about their work and answer questions! Check out the link below for more info and to register!

The group will meet at the VDRC office (817A Fort Street)!

Kassi Welch, a PhD student at the University of British Columbia working under the supervision of Dr. Erica Bennett in the School of Kinesiology, is conducting a study on the experiences of adults living with lower limb amputation.

They are seeking individuals who:

- Had a lower limb amputation as an adult (18 years or older);
- Had their amputation between 1 and 10 years ago; and
- Are currently between the ages of 18 and 64

You will be asked questions about your experiences of living with your amputation, movement and physical activity, and your thoughts and feelings about the technology you use (e.g., your prosthesis, wheelchair, etc.) for movement. You will have the option of participating in a creative, poetry session!

Commitment:

- 2 interviews of 1-1.5 hr (~3 hrs total) on Zoom
- Optional 3 poetry session (1-1.5 hr) for total commitment of (~4 hrs)

This study aims to better understand how individuals experience their bodies, assistive devices (such as prostheses or wheelchairs), and movement in everyday life after lower limb amputation.

Interested in playing some fun video games with friends? Wa-hoo!

Next Tuesday, October 6th, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm, we're hosting an Accessible Gaming Hangout! We'll be featuring a variety of Nintendo Switch games that can be played with two or more players! Many of these games also have some really neat accessibility features!

The game line-up includes:
-Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: classic racing fun for up to four players, with steering wheel controllers!
-The Vale: Shadow of the Crown: an immersive role-playing game that is entirely
played through audio cues, ideal for people who are blind!
-Super Mario Party: a competitive multiplayer with a large collection of fun mini games!
-Nintendo Switch Sports: a variety of sports, including bowling, basketball and more, with simple motion controls
