🌟STAFF HIGHLIGHT! 🌟

Meet , our Supportive Recovery Program Coordinator

Shona has been working at Threshold for over 7 years. While completing her Bachelor's of Social Work, she worked on her weekends across our whole neighbourhood of care at Threshold House, Holly House, and Mitchell House.

For the past 5.5 years, she's helped create and build our nationally recognized Supportive Recovery program. It's a genuine love and care for her work that drives her to show up every day for our kids and young people - as a youth, she lost close friends to drug addiction. Now she creates the activities and education for our 4 month program, always adapting to best fit our youth's needs, learning from every person that joins us, and updating as new research informs best practices.

The opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but meaningful human connection, and her work at SRP has created powerful community: one of her favourite parts of her work is Recovery Group, a gathering place for all current youth and alumni at Threshold to come every week and engage in recovery conversations. Recently she helped create a peer support role to co-facilitate each week, which has been an incredible way to see the youth graduate throughout their own recovery.

Shona's passion for harm reduction and dedicated love for her youth and work is evident every day, honouring the lives of the those she has known, and working to create brighter futures for every youth she works with, all year long 🩷

Food and art and pets oh my! 🦔🥬🎨

We spent the day at PKOLS making delicious salad rolls and checking out the incredible artwork created by our kiddos that fills the halls of our Youth Supportive Housing! Our youth even filmed part of this video! 🎥

❤️ The salad rolls were so good they said “it tastes like Jesus was resurrected into a food” and they could feel the spirit on their tongues.

🩷This year's theme for International Youth Day is "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations" which rings significantly true for youth experiencing homelessness.

The youth at Threshold come from many different contexts, from all over BC, with our top referrals coming from currently unhoused youth, youth aging out of foster care, and youth fleeing violence and abuse. Homelessness repeatedly and disproportionately affects youth coming from different contexts, and is shaped by intersecting social, structural, and identity-based factors, highlighting homelessness is not experienced equally by everyone: 42% of our youth are Indigenous, 39% of our youth are 2SLGBTQ+, and 50% of our youth are young girls and women, all communities continuously over-represented in homelessness.

These contexts see youth in Victoria devoting their lives to survival, but like any other youth, our youth deserve the chance to be young. To find joy. To connect with friends. To experience life beyond the constant worry of where they will sleep and where they will find their next meal. All youth do have common aspirations: safe housing, time and space for connection with friends and loved ones, and positive communities of their own.

This International Youth Day, we'd like to highlight the resilient youth currently in our programs, and all unhoused youth in Victoria accessing support from our incredible community partners as we work together to help youth access food, counselling, health and wellness essentials, life skills, family services, and recovery support. This collective work is helping young people heal, recover, and imagine futures that once felt out of reach.

At Threshold, our goal is to create conditions for youth to heal. And then, with a bedrock of support they know they can trust, youth begin to start thinking about a brighter future for themselves, because life is about more than surviving.

🌎🌍🌏 Wherever they're from, however they show up in the world, every young person deserves the same shot at opportunity, belonging, and being heard.

Check out the incredible dreamcatchers our youth made!

This month our Indigenous Wellness team hosted a dreamcatcher making workshop drop-in day where youth got to create their very own dreamcatcher 🧡

We are so inspired by the creativity and artistry that our youth showed up with! And excited to see everyone bring a unique and thoughtful design to take home with them ⭐️

🏠❤️ Today our team got to decorate and set up a SHY apartment! Our Semi-Independent housing model includes Threshold House (an 8 suite home) and scattered housing for youth (SHY) across Victoria, in 30+ apartments.

While in a SHY apartment, youth experience their lives as independent adults and begin a path to self sufficiency, with the support of a caring and supportive team in their corner.

This unit just got a brand new couch, bed, tables, and chairs, and we were so excited to set it up ready for a new youth to come home!

Featuring an awesome penguin quilt - as every youth who enters a Threshold program receives a handmade quilt from our quilting guild 🪡

⭐We're so close to reaching our Fun Fund goal!⭐

The Fun Fund gives our youth the chance to just be young, to try new things, to have fun, and feel included. And we need your help!

This summer we launched our Fun Fund to support our youth with fun activities all year long, and we're over half way there! This month we received another letter from our youth, with new activity ideas like fishing, paintball, aquarium visits, laser tag, and rock climbing, and we're hoping to make the rest of their 2026 filled with fun!

Last month we visited the Butterfly Gardens with our Fun Fund, and we're planning a few exciting trips in the coming weeks that we can't wait to share more about.

Will you help us reach our goal? Support our youth by visiting the link in our bio, or sharing this post to your community!

🧗$30 provides one youth a rock climbing pass
☕️$60 brings 4 youth to a clay workshop
🌲$200 buys two youth adventure course passes
👾☄️🍕$300 organizes a laser tag party with pizza!

🌈🤍 Happy Pride from our team and youth at Threshold! It was the perfect weather to be cheering with our community and we had so much fun decorating a Jeep this year with a balloon arch!

With 39% of our youth identifying as 2SLGBTQ+ and 25% of our youth identifying as gender diverse, Pride means so much to us.

We’re so grateful that we get to be part of the parade, and thank you to everyone for showing up and supporting our youth and the q***r community in Greater Victoria.

❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷🤎🤍🩶🖤

P.S. check out the final results of our Pride tie dye barbecue shirts !!! Thank you to BCI for helping make it happen!

🩵 We have been so grateful to host our friends at StepStones for Youth at our head office this week! StepStones supports youth involved in the child welfare system in Ontario by improving educational outcomes, securing stable housing, and building long-lasting support networks. We are excited to roll out some of their innovative methodologies in Victoria, and work together towards the same vision where all youth can not only survive, but thrive.

What an inspiring week of learning! Thank you Heather, Denise, and Brenna for joining us and sharing the incredible work you’re doing for youth ❤️
