In the days and weeks following September 11, 2001, Canadians from coast to coast stepped forward to help those affected by the tragedy. From welcoming stranded travellers and opening emergency shelters to providing meals and offering emotional and spiritual care, communities across Canada demonstrated remarkable compassion and service.
To honour those who answered the call, commemorative challenge coins have been created to recognize the dedication of Salvation Army staff, volunteers, and responders who supported relief efforts across Canada and assisted in New York City.

These coins serve as a lasting tribute to their commitment, sacrifice, and the spirit of helping others in times of crisis. We are proud to recognize these individuals and the role Canadians played in the response to 9/11.

Remembering Swissair Flight 111

On September 2, 1998, Swissair Flight 111 crashed into St. Margaret’s Bay near Peggy’s Cove, taking the lives of all 229 people on board.

Over the course of the response, more than 100 Salvation Army volunteers and officers were involved. Teams provided food and refreshments to responders and caregivers, while also supporting the families who travelled to Nova Scotia following the crash.

Their work extended beyond practical assistance. EDS accompanied families to the crash site, supported them at their hotels, and provided emotional and spiritual care during an incredibly difficult time.

**The photo below was taken at the 25th anniversary candlelight vigil in 2023, where our EDS team provided snacks and hydration to those gathered to remember and honour the lives lost.

Today, 28 years later, we remember those who were lost, their families and loved ones, and the many people who continue to honour their memory. ❤️

Today, Historica Canada has released a Heritage Minute highlighting the extraordinary response of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, following the events of September 11, 2001.

As thousands of airline passengers were unexpectedly diverted to the community, local residents, organizations, and volunteers came together to provide comfort and care. The Salvation Army played an important role in the response, helping to register displaced travellers, serving meals, offering emotional and spiritual care, and opening its doors to those in need.
