150th birthday for Bruno Walter today

Born on this day in 1876, Bruno Walter remains one of the great conductors of the 20th century — a musician whose interpretations combined structural clarity with warmth, lyricism and profound humanity.

Closely associated with the music of Gustav Mahler, whom he knew personally, Walter also left enduring recordings of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and many others. His conducting never seemed merely to impose a conception on the score: it allowed the music to breathe, speak and reveal its emotional truth.

Remembering Bruno Walter on his birthday — an artist whose legacy still resonates through some of the most cherished recordings in classical music.
