East York Learning Experience

East York Learning Experience EYLE’s adult literacy, numeracy and digital literacy programs transform lives and enhance self-worth

Every day, EYLE helps adults who are overwhelmed by the challenges they face. They may be struggling to find work; they may dream of getting their high school equivalency and going to college. They may be caught in a low-level job that doesn’t reflect their true potential or, unable to read articles on basic health care, they may be struggling to cope with a manageable illness that threatens to cu

t their life short. Since our inception in 1987, we have provided help for individuals faced with limited to no possibilities in employment, education, or greater personal independence as they struggle with reading, writing, and grasping basic mathematical concepts. Our program provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults who seek to overcome the social and economic barriers associated with low literacy levels.

June is Pride Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the diversity, contributions, and resilience of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

It is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and recognize the importance of creating welcoming and inclusive spaces where everyone feels respected and valued.

At East York Learning Experience, we are committed to fostering a supportive learning environment where all individuals have the opportunity to build skills, achieve their goals, and feel a sense of belonging.

🧡 National Indigenous History Month🧡

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada.

This month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the unique cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. It is also a time to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and consider how we can each contribute to reconciliation.

Learning begins with listening, understanding, and taking time to engage with Indigenous voices, stories, and perspectives.

Together, we can help build a more informed, respectful, and inclusive future.

Workplace Literacy Tip: Clear Writing Matters

Clear communication is essential in every workplace. Practicing writing — even in small ways — can make a big difference in confidence and skill.

Encourage learners to try:
✔️ Writing short emails
✔️ Summarizing instructions or tasks
✔️ Creating quick checklists or notes

Small, regular writing exercises help adults build strong workplace writing skills, making everyday work tasks easier and more effective.

💡 Tip: Start with just one short email or note today — small steps
lead to big improvements!

Reading Motivation: Small Steps Matter

Reading doesn’t have to be long or complicated. Even a few minutes a day can help build confidence, improve comprehension, and make everyday tasks easier.

Try starting with something short and meaningful:
✔️ A short article online
✔️ A recipe
✔️ A message from a friend or family member

Little by little, small reading habits add up — and every page counts!

💡 Take a few minutes today to read something that interests you and see how it boosts your confidence.

What do you enjoy reading most?

Digital Skill of the Week: Using Tabs

Did you know you can open multiple tabs in your internet browser?

Tabs help you stay organized when you are:
✔️ Searching for information
✔️ Comparing websites
✔️ Filling out online forms
✔️ Reading instructions while completing a task

Instead of closing one page to open another, tabs let you keep everything in one place at the top of your screen.

To open a new tab:
• On a computer: Click the + sign next to your current tab
• On a phone: Tap the tab icon (usually a small square or number)

Learning small digital skills like this makes online tasks easier and less stressful. Confidence grows one click at a time!

Have you tried using tabs before? Give it a try today!
