East York Learning Experience EYLE’s adult literacy, numeracy and digital literacy programs transform lives and enhance self-worth

Every day, EYLE helps adults who are overwhelmed by the challenges they face. They may be struggling to find work; they may dream of getting their high school equivalency and going to college. They may be caught in a low-level job that doesn’t reflect their true potential or, unable to read articles on basic health care, they may be struggling to cope with a manageable illness that threatens to cut their life short. Since our inception in 1987, we have provided help for individuals faced with limited to no possibilities in employment, education, or greater personal independence as they struggle with reading, writing, and grasping basic mathematical concepts. Our program provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults who seek to overcome the social and economic barriers associated with low literacy levels.

🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at EYLE! 🦃

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we’d like to wish our learners, tutors, volunteers, and community partners a safe, restful, and meaningful long weekend.

Please note that we will be closed on Monday, October 12th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

We’ll reopen on Tuesday, October 13th and look forward to welcoming everyone back.

May this weekend be a chance to pause, reflect, and appreciate the people and moments that make our community special. 💛

Health information is part of everyday life — from reading appointment instructions and completing forms to understanding medication information and finding reliable information online.

Health literacy helps us find, understand, and use health information with confidence.

💡 This month’s tip: If you don’t understand something, ask questions! It’s okay to ask a healthcare provider to explain information in simpler terms, repeat instructions, or write something down.

Strong literacy skills can make everyday tasks easier and help adults feel more confident navigating important information.

East York Learning Experience invites community members to join our Computer Café, a welcoming space where adults can receive support with everyday technology skills. 💻

Technology plays a major role in daily life — from sending emails and completing online forms to using apps and working with Microsoft Office.

Our Computer Café offers a supportive, relaxed environment where participants can ask questions, build confidence, and develop practical digital skills.

📅 Next session: Thursday, October 15th
🕐 Choose a time:
• 1–3 PM
• 2–4 PM
📍 Location: 266 Donlands Avenue (between Mortimer and Cosburn)

Participants can receive help with:
✔ Using laptops, smartphones, or tablets
✔ Email and online forms
✔ Social media and apps
✔ Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
✔ General technology questions

Participants may use our laptops on site or bring their own device.

This program is open to adults of all skill levels, and beginners are always welcome. To ensure everyone receives personalized support, sessions are limited to 6 participants.

📚 Literacy Tip: Read the First + Last Sentence 📚

Want a quick way to get a better idea of what a paragraph is about?

Try reading the first and last sentence. 👀

The first sentence often introduces the topic, while the last sentence can help wrap up the main idea.

This simple strategy can help when you’re:
🔹 Reading an article
🔹 Looking through instructions
🔹 Studying something new
🔹 Trying to find the main idea
🔹 Reading a longer piece of information

You’ll still want to read the whole paragraph when you need the details, but starting with the first and last
sentence can help you understand what to expect and stay focused as you read.

This season, adults in our community are continuing to build skills in reading, writing, math, and digital literacy — one session, one new skill, and one step at a time.

We’re inspired by the dedication learners bring to every session. Learning something new takes practice and patience, and every bit of progress matters. 💛

Whether someone is working on reading and writing, strengthening their math skills, becoming more comfortable with technology, or working toward a personal goal, we’re proud to support learners along the way.

✔️ Delivered our Computer Basics Level I course, helping adult learners build practical digital skills and confidence.
✔️ Collaborated with The Career Foundation to provide learners with valuable job search and career development opportunities.
✔️ Hosted our Annual Members’ Meeting (AMM) and Volunteer Recognition Event, bringing together our community to celebrate our volunteers and recognize the important contributions they make to EYLE.

📈 Our impact continues to grow:
• Customer satisfaction reached 111% of our target.
• Suitability reached 108% of our target.
• Service coordination reached 141% of our goal.
• We served 162% more learners than our provincial target.
• Learner progress reached 121% of our target.

A new month is here, bringing cooler days, colourful leaves, cozy reading, and new opportunities to learn.

October can be a great time to slow down, settle into a routine, and make a little space for learning. Maybe that means picking up a book, practising a new digital skill, working on a personal goal, or learning something that can make everyday life a little easier.

At East York Learning Experience (EYLE), we believe learning happens at every age and at every pace. Whether you’re building your confidence with technology, improving your reading and writing skills, working toward a goal, or simply exploring something new, every step counts. 💛

Learning doesn’t have to happen all at once. A few minutes of reading, a little practice, or trying something new can add up to meaningful progress over time.

🧡 🪶 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🪶 🧡

On September 30, we remember and honour the children who never came home from residential schools, Survivors, and their families and communities.

Wearing orange is one way to show support and remember the experiences of Indigenous children who were separated from their families, communities, cultures, and languages. Every Child Matters.

As an organization dedicated to adult learning and literacy, EYLE recognizes the importance of listening, learning, and making space for Indigenous languages, knowledge, and stories.

Today, we invite our community to take time to reflect, learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and listen to Indigenous voices as part of the ongoing journey toward truth and reconciliation.
