On September 23, a movement for housing justice erupted in Madrid when 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal was evicted from her home of 70 years. Her struggle quickly flooded streets across Spain, with protesters demanding solutions to high housing costs and housing instability, and her story took the world by storm.

Maricarmen had been fighting her eviction for 7 years. She died hours before she was set to sign a new rental agreement. Many protesters and Spanish residents attribute her death to her eviction.

Maricarmen is no longer with us. Yet, her fight won Spain's tenants a four-year eviction ban, energized a nationwide movement, and put a spotlight on the greed-induced global housing crisis.

Rest in power, Maricarmen. May we all take up the fight for housing justice in your absence.

Julie is a Lake Promenade resident in Etobicoke and a TTU member. Here, she shares a recap of their tenant association’s recent victory at the Ontario Land Tribunal, where tenants were able to block the demolition and removal and displacement of so many long-term residents from their homes.

Tenants in multiple buildings came together to stand up to Compten Management and won, ensuring people come before profit. That’s the power of tenant organizing.

When housing is treated as a commodity, tenants suffer. One person's home should not be a corporation's investment.

Applying capitalist logic to housing incentivizes evictions because it becomes profitable to displace people.

The solution is not giving free reign to developers or private equity, but building public & non-market housing.

Last year, Doug Ford and the Ontario PCs passed Bill 60 despite a groundswell of tenant resistance.

Bill 60's changes came into effect on Monday. These are the ways Doug Ford and his landlord buddies are making the LTB WORSE for tenants & speeding up evictions.

Landlords love evictions because it helps them get around rent control. Ford's Bill 60 turns the LTC into an EVICTION MACHINE.
