Womanact

Womanact WomanACT envisions a world where women are free from violence. See the Best Practice Guidelines.

WomanACT works collaboratively to eradicate violence against women through research, policy, education and community mobilization. The organization was founded upon the need to develop clear policy and procedures with respect to screening, identifying and intervening in woman abuse cases. This is essential because without policy development, each practitioner responds based on her/his own personal

bias and discretion. Only through policy development that guides practice, can professional staff can be held accountable for their intervention. Over the years, as we have matured, the organization has moved into doing research, completed best practice guidelines, and created a number of powerful community education tools. Through our ongoing work we are continually exploring new issues and continuing to build community capacity by developing resources and tools for front line practitioners.

📢 This month, WomanACT recognizes National Indigenous History Month and honours the strength, leadership, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis women, girls, and gender-diverse people across Canada. 🧡

Indigenous women and organizations continue to lead critical work addressing gender-based violence, community safety, healing, advocacy, and systemic inequities rooted in ongoing colonial violence.

This month — and every day — we encourage our communities to support Indigenous-led organizations, amplify Indigenous voices, and engage in meaningful acts of Truth and Reconciliation.

How can you get involved?

1️⃣ Support Indigenous women-led organizations advancing safety, healing, advocacy, and community care — including Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA) Anduhyaun Inc. and Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto

2️⃣ Learn from Indigenous writers, artists, educators, and advocates whose work highlights the realities of colonialism, resistance, and resilience.

3️⃣ Amplify Indigenous voices by sharing content from Indigenous creators, activists, and community leaders.

4️⃣ Attend local Indigenous-led events, workshops, and community gatherings to learn directly from communities.

🧡 Supporting Indigenous women and communities means supporting leadership, self-determination, and long-term community care.

What does it really take to navigate a career in STEM? 🔬

This series shares honest, first-hand stories from women across engineering, construction, geoscience, and tech—where credibility can feel hard-won and speaking up comes with risk.

Each episode connects these insights to practical ideas for change—highlighting both the challenges and the collective power to build more equitable workplaces. ✨

🏛️Earlier this week, WomanACT was honoured to attend the debate on Lydia’s Law at Queen’s Park, invited by MPP Peggy Sattler and MPP Catherine Fife.

⚖️Lydia’s Law would bring much-needed transparency and accountability to how Ontario’s justice system handles sexual assault cases. The legislation would require annual public reporting on progress implementing recommendations from the Auditor General’s 2019 audit of Ontario’s criminal court system, establish an ongoing review mechanism, assess the adequacy of the Victim Quick Response Program, and help ensure survivors are aware of available independent legal advice supports.

Survivors and advocates across Ontario have called for meaningful action for far too long. Lydia’s Law is an opportunity to move beyond acknowledgment and toward systemic change that strengthens survivor safety, accountability, and prevention.

📚 Revisit our issue brief, “East Asian Women in Canada.”

This brief explores the realities and resilience of East Asian women, shaped by a long history of racism, exclusion, and resistance. From historical policies to present-day discrimination, these experiences continue to impact safety, opportunity, and wellbeing.

We examine how harmful narratives like the “model minority” and “perpetual foreigner” persist—particularly in the wake of COVID-19—and the ways they affect women from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese communities.

The brief also shares lived experiences, including the story of a newcomer navigating racism, job insecurity, and workplace harassment while trying to support her family.

📢Yesterday morning, the Womanact team was thrilled to officially launch alongside the ACEC-Ontario Women’s Network Breakfast Meetup in Toronto—bringing together women in consulting engineering to connect, share experiences, and strengthen professional networks. ✨

reflects the collaboration behind this campaign, drawing from the Belonging, Understanding, Inclusion, Leadership, and Diversity in Engineering Community of Practice (BUILD-CoP) at ACEC-Ontario, whose partnership with WomanACT co-produced the Gendered Microaggressions in Engineering infographics.

🤝Everyday interactions shape workplace culture and can have a significant impact on inclusion, belonging, and career progression in engineering. Through this campaign, ACEC-Ontario and WomanACT are raising awareness about how gendered microaggressions show up in professional engineering workplaces, while sharing practical tools to help individuals and organizations recognize and address them.

As we lead up to International Women in Engineering Day, we invite everyone across the sector to be part of building workplaces rooted in respect, equity, and inclusion. Meaningful change happens through shared responsibility, reflection, and collective action.

Join us over the next month as we continue sharing resources, tools, and conversations to help BUILD equity in engineering workplaces.
