Canada’s new National Food Security Strategy is a big step toward building a stronger, more affordable, and more resilient food system.

It's meaningful to see this focus on food infrastructure, local food production, and stronger supply chains, especially as we're already seeing what that looks like on the ground through programs like Bridging the Nutrition Gap.

By purchasing food in volume from local growers and suppliers and working alongside local businesses, schools, and community partners, we’re able to stretch every dollar further, providing up to 45% more food to kids than local nutrition programs could buy at retail prices, while supporting farmers, food producers, local businesses, delivery networks, and the volunteers who make school food programs possible every day.

And we're not stopping there. To meet growing demand, we're building Toronto’s first dedicated School Food Hub—a space that will expand food purchasing and distribution capacity, increase refrigerated and frozen storage, and strengthen volunteer training for students and community members.

When we invest in local food systems and nutrition programs, we’re investing in healthier children, stronger communities, and a more resilient future for everyone. 🌟🇨🇦

Toronto’s child poverty rate has climbed to 25.7% after three straight years of increases. And for families already struggling, things are getting even harder, pushing them further to the margins.

This means more children are showing up at school hungry, relying on nutrition programs to get through the day. School communities are doing all they can, but the need is growing faster than the resources.

No child should go hungry. Together, we can help Toronto kids build bright, healthy futures. 📚🍎🌟 Learn more about local nutrition programs: tfss.ca/student-nutrition-programs

Fun field trip today with our provincial partners from MCSS and saw an amazing morning meal program in action! 🍊 Talk about a throwback! Buzzing hallways, morning announcements, and that classic school-morning energy. 🎒📚

Past the nostalgia, it was also a firsthand look at the growing need in our city and how communities and partners are coming together on the ground, working tirelessly to help make sure kids are well-nourished, focused, and ready to thrive. 🌟

🌲☀️ Yesterday, beyond 3:30 kiddos gathered under beautiful blue skies at Earl Bales Park to connect and thrive at the annual beyond 3:30 Wellness Walk!

Kids explored the forest, played a wildlife-themed game of “I Spy...”, built teamwork skills, and stayed active through games with friends, all topped off with a delicious dinner!

🙌 Huge shoutout to our incredible volunteers who led these activities and showed up for our kids. You made this day extra special!

Bridging the Nutrition Gap is bringing more food for more kids by stretching every dollar available. 🍎📚 🌟

A huge shoutout to the City of Toronto, led by Mayor Olivia Chow, for continuing to invest in nourishing food for Toronto kids. Together, we're helping kids learn and grow, and along the way, strengthening local farms and businesses, developing skills, and creating jobs every step of the way. It takes all hands on deck to make this happen. Healthy kids today. A stronger Toronto tomorrow! ✨

When we gather around the table, amazing things happen. ❤️

By bringing together our best ideas, resources, and partners, we’re helping nourish kids across our city. Through Bridging the Nutrition Gap, supplemental food is reaching 108,000+ students in more than 290 schools, and we’re on track to reach 400+ school communities next year!

It takes a village: governments like the City of Toronto, nonprofit partners like Second Harvest Deuxième Récolte, donors, farmers, local businesses, and volunteers all coming together with one goal: to stretch every dollar further so we can bring more food to more kids. The result? Healthier kids, vibrant communities, and a thriving Toronto! 🌟
