Less than one week remains until our Carmina Burana concert next Sunday, April 26 at 7:30pm at Kingston Road United Church. We have been rehearsing with our usual high enthusiasm pushing our musical skills to ever higher standards under the guidance of our Artistic Director, Mervin W Fick. This week we brush final details in our dress rehearsals.

We will be over 60 choristers, together with Mississauga Chamber Singers and joined by soprano Nune Ananyan, tenor Benjamin Done and bass Alexander Hajek. Two pianos played by Ron Greidanus and Alfonso DeSantis and the TorQ Percussion Quartet will fill the space of Kingston United Church with energy.

The music of Brahms, Bartok, Grieg and Hindemith will frame our main feature piece, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.

If you have purchased your tickets, thank you and looking forward to have you enjoy with us this wonderful music. If you are still hesitating, don’t delay anymore and go to our event website. There is still a limited number of tickets available.

“I am in the world only for the purpose of composing.”

Romantic composers were drawn to nature, spirituality, and inner experience—themes that resonate deeply as winter begins to loosen its grip.

Schubert, Brahms, and Mendelssohn all wrote music that turns inward, offering warmth, hope, and reflection rather than spectacle.

Songs of Spirit and Nature invites you into that reflective space—one that feels especially welcome as we anticipate spring.

A missa brevis—Latin for “short Mass”—is a concise musical setting of the Mass text.

In Schubert’s hands, brevity does not mean simplicity. His Mass No. 5 balances efficiency with beauty, allowing the text to flow naturally while preserving emotional depth and spiritual focus.

It’s music designed for devotion, not display.

In Mass No. 5 in G Major, Franz Schubert originally scored the work for choir, soloists, string orchestra, and organ—choosing strings for their warmth, clarity, and expressive range.

The strings provide a gentle foundation throughout the Mass, supporting the voices without overwhelming them. Their role is subtle but essential: shaping the emotional atmosphere and reinforcing the devotional character of the music.

Listen for how the strings move between quiet support and lyrical expression, helping the music feel intimate, flowing, and deeply human.

Composed in less than a week in early March 1815, Schubert’s Mass No. 5 in G Major is the best known of his missae breves—short Mass settings marked by clarity and restraint.

Rather than dramatic virtuosity, Schubert leans toward a gentle, prayerful mood, with modest solo passages and a strong sense of choral unity. It is music that feels sincere, grounded, and deeply human.

This sense of intimacy makes it a perfect centrepiece for Songs of Spirit and Nature.
