Back by popular demand, Spotlight Talks are returning to the Educators Anti-Racism Conference! This year we’re looking for educators AND students!

We’re looking for inspiring, solutions-focused student and educator teams to share short-form Spotlight Talks about what they are doing to center joy, courage, and curiosity in schools and classrooms.

We want to hear about real ideas being put into practice. Talks should spotlight a promising practice, initiative, approach, or solution that strengthens belonging, challenges racism and inequity, or helps students feel seen, valued, and empowered. Presentations may highlight work happening at the classroom, school, or school board level.

A racial slur is used during group work. A homophobic comment is dismissed as a joke. An ableist term has become so common that students — and sometimes adults — barely react to it anymore.

What happens next?

Join us to learn how you can shift you community for reacting to incidents to changing the school culture.

Two times to choose from:

September 1 | 12:00 PM ET
Time Zones:
9:00 AM PST | 10:00 AM MST | 11:00 AM CST | 1:00 PM AST | 1:30 PM NST

September 29 | 3:45 PM ET
Time Zones:
12:45 PST | 1:45 MST | 2:45 CST | 4:45 AST | 5:15 NST

Across Canada, educators and school leaders tell us they want to address harmful and discriminatory language, but knowing what to say in the moment, how to turn an incident into learning, and how to build a consistent approach across an entire school isn’t always straightforward.

That’s what the Words Matter Campaign was built to help schools do.

On September 1 or 29, join Harmony Movement for a free, 45-minute online demonstration of the campaign and see how more than 300 schools across Canada are using Words Matter to help educators respond with greater confidence, equip students to speak up, and intentionally build a school culture where harmful language doesn’t simply go unaddressed.

In preparation for the new school year, we’ve removed one more barrier: Words Matter Now Includes Curriculum Connections Across Canada

Over the past two years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside hundreds of educators, principals, school board leaders, and community partners through the Words Matter Campaign.

As the campaign has grown, one question has come up again and again:

“How does this connect to our curriculum?”

It’s a fair question.

Educators are balancing an incredible number of priorities. Every new initiative has to fit within an already full curriculum, limited planning time, and the realities of busy classrooms.

We never wanted the Words Matter Campaign to feel like “one more thing.”

So we did the work.

Today, we’re excited to share that the Words Matter Campaign now includes curriculum connections for every province and territory across Canada.

About a month ago our friends at The 44 North dropped their full podcast episode “Beyond Words”, on the power of language and the importance of addressing anti-black racism in our schools and wider communities.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with our friends at the 44 North for the live recording event. Shoutouts to our very own Tracey Kayy | Musician | Poet | Speaker for being one of the panelists, and much love to all of the voices and hands involved.

You can check it out on the link in The 44 North bio. It’s a great listen to get ready for an exciting new season of programming.
