Bronze again. Second year running. Canada beat Mexico in four sets Sunday in Morelos to take third at the Pan American Cup, and two Ontario guys were right in the middle of it.

Arthur Szwarc, from Toronto, led the whole team with 17 points. Trent Cherewaty, out of Mulmur, was part of the block that shut Mexico down at the net. Canada out-blocked them 12-5, which is what actually won this match. Down 22-21 in the fourth, Canada reeled off three straight points to close it out.

Coach David Preston put it plainly after the semifinal loss the day before: the group didn't repeat their mistakes. Sunday, they didn't.

It's been an incredible week for a couple of Canada's mens programs with international competition.

While we were at the Beach Ontario Championships, Canada's U17 boys took home silver in the U17 Pan American Cup, losing to Venezuela - a team that hadn't dropped a set all tournament. Two Ontario athletes, who played on the same club team this past season, received high honours when the tournament finished.

Julian Josephs put up 19 points in that final match and finished as the tournament's leading scorer, period. Liam Bendavid had seven blocks in that same match on his way to being named one of the tournament's best.

A few days after that, in Morelos, Mexico, the senior men's team swept through pool play undefeated and locked up a direct spot in the semifinals of the Pan American Cup. Kaden Schmidt led the Canadian charge with 13 points. Erik Siksna, a Queen's grad who was putting up numbers in the OUA a couple years ago, tabbed 10. Now he's leading Canada in kills on the international stage.

"Use everything as motivation. Don't take any time playing for granted."

That's exactly the kind of athlete the Jason Senechal Memorial Award was made for. Congratulations, Ben.

Presenting Ben with the award is the mother of the late Jason Senechal, Gale.

Every year before the players meeting during the Youth Open Beach Ontario Championships weekend, we present the Jason Senechal Memorial Award.

The award symbolizes fair play, perseverance and sportsmanship, named after the late Jason Senechal who was an exceptional beach volleyball player in the early 2000s.

The honour this year is bestowed upon Ben Charles who very much embodies the qualities that this award was created. A 17U medalist last year and an 18U provincial gold medal just last weekend, Ben's achievements on the sand are equaled by his attributes as an athlete and person. Congratulations Ben!
