🕯🕯 Today we mourn the loss of two women killed in senseless acts of intimate partner violence.

Mouloud Moussouni was among the first to respond when the sound of children screaming rang out in his Montreal neighbourhood. The screaming came following a fatal attack that left a 41-year-old mother dead Monday. Moussouni recalled the devastating moment one of the victim's children revealed what had happened inside the home. “The children, they saw. He said, ‘My father killed my mom,’” Moussouni said. Police have said this is a case of intimate partner violence, but have not confirmed the man’s relation to the children or if the couple was still together.

Five women have been killed in incidents of intimate partner violence in the greater Montreal area this year. Monday’s incident comes two days after a 44-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment in the Saint-Michel area. Her 51-year-old partner will face charges, police say.

The recent trial of a Saint John man convicted of stabbing his two sons to death in 2025 has left many people reeling, searching for answers about how such a tragedy could happen and how to prevent similar incidents.

Roman Kamyshnyy, 46, was sentenced last week to two life prison terms, to be served concurrently with no chance of parole for 25 years, after a jury found him guilty in June of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the boys, aged 10 and 17.

Most people “can’t even fathom” a parent killing his or her own child, said domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe, a psychologist and researcher based in London, ON. But as many as 30 children across Canada are killed by a parent every year, with about half of these child homicides occurring in situations of intimate partner violence.

This is “often when a woman leaves an abusive relationship, and her ex-partner kills the children as an act of revenge,” said Jaffe, professor emeritus at Western University and director emeritus of the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children. “The male is angry at his partner for leaving the relationship, and the one way he can hurt her most is to harm the children.”

🕯 Today we mourn the loss of another woman killed in a senseless act of intimate partner violence.

On Saturday, Toronto police responded to reports of a person with a knife inside a residential building. Officers found 29-year-old Thi Nguyen with stab wounds in the hallway of an upper floor in the building. Despite life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect fled the scene prior to the officers' arrival, but police have since charged Thi's husband, Martin Ly, with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking.
