North America ranks third globally for generosity when measured by percent of income given, with donors contributing an average of 0.94% of their income to charitable causes.

This reflects a deeply embedded culture of philanthropy and personal commitment to social good. There is room for a shift in how people give relative to their means, but many donors still lack the confidence and tools to give more effectively.

What makes Canadians more likely to give to charity?

Our Giving in Canada report found that nearly six in ten Canadians would give more if they had better information about charities – like how their money would support their operations or what the results of their initiatives are.

Transparency is key. Donors expect clarity at every stage, so a lack of transparent practices can erode donor trust and limit giving.

At the same time, half of Canadians say they would give more if they had more themselves. This makes it essential to remind donors that even small or recurring gifts can add up to create lasting impact when combined with the support of others.

In 2024, 16% of Canadian donors gave to humanitarian causes, and among those, a striking 81% gave to international crisis response efforts — making Canadian donors far more likely than their global counterparts to support humanitarian needs abroad.
