Last week, our team had the opportunity to connect with students at the University of Toronto Nuclear Energy Association’s Nuclear Industry Day.

We were pleased to be part of such a meaningful event and appreciated the opportunity to engage with talented students, share insights into our work, and discuss current and future career opportunities within our organization. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting the next generation of nuclear energy professionals.

Today, on National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we join people across Canada in remembering the children who were taken from their families and the lasting impact of the residential school system on generations of Indigenous Peoples. Wearing orange is a visible act of remembrance and a call to continue learning about this painful history.

was inspired by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, whose story has helped spark conversations about the effects of residential schools and the importance of truth, healing, and understanding.

As we mark this day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing reconciliation by learning from Indigenous knowledge, creating space for Indigenous voices, and supporting efforts that contribute to stronger relationships and a more equitable future.

Another exciting milestone for the Centre of Expertise in Ignace.

A new billboard now marks the future home of the approximately 55,000-square-foot facility, which will accommodate 160 to 200 NWMO employees.

The Centre of Expertise will be a cornerstone of the NWMO’s presence in Ignace, bringing people together to learn, collaborate and advance Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

Through our Sponsorships and Donations Program, we invest in initiatives that help strengthen communities. Since 2014, our program has supported organizations and projects that create lasting benefits for people, communities and the environment, reflecting our commitment to corporate citizenship.

Our sponsorships and donations are guided by four key priorities: investing in northwestern Ontario communities, fostering future leaders, supporting Indigenous communities as part of our Reconciliation journey, and advancing social and environmental sustainability. Through these focus areas, we aim to create meaningful, long-term impacts that help communities thrive today and for generations to come.

We were pleased to host a workshop during the Atlantic Indigenous-Led Energy Symposium in Saint John to share our approach to the safe long-term management of Canada’s radioactive waste.

The NWMO's engagement team has been holding workshops and discussions with groups across Canada as we seek feedback on our proposed approach to selecting a site for Canada’s second deep geological repository which will house intermediate-level and non-fuel high-level radioactive waste, and potentially used fuel from new nuclear projects. We spoke about our approach to fostering community engagement and meaningful Indigenous and community participation and welcomed new input as part of the Ailes Conference in Saint John.

Used nuclear fuel emits radiation and must be carefully managed to protect people and the environment.

Canada’s plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel includes a deep geological repository, where multiple engineered and natural barriers will work together to safely contain and isolate used nuclear fuel and its radiation for generations to come.
