Harbourfront Centre is Canada’s community waterfront, home of arts, culture, learning and recreation, and a registered, charitable not-for-profit cultural organization operating a 10-acre campus on Toronto’s central waterfront. Harbourfront Centre is an international arts hub uniting our community through the magic of music, dance, theatre, arts, culture and recreation all year long. Applications are now open for the 2027 Artist-in-Residence Program at Harbourfront Centre! 🎨

We recently welcomed a new group of Artists-in-Residence into our Craft & Design Studios, and now we’re now looking for the next group of emerging artists to join this creative community for 2027.

Across Design, Glass, Metal and Textiles, residents receive dedicated studio access, mentorship and professional development opportunities, plus the time and space to experiment, make new work and build the skills, experience and connections to develop a sustainable creative career.

As the only long-term Canadian residency supporting contemporary craft and design, this is a special opportunity to take your practice further.

Reconciliation is not a day on the calendar. It is an ongoing, living responsibility.
 
What does that responsibility look like for each of us?
 
For former Harbourfront Centre Artist-in-Residence Marissa Magneson, it starts with learning. With listening. With asking questions. And with finding meaningful ways to participate in reconciliation that makes sense in our own lives.
 
Her installation, Ribbons of (Re)conciliation, brings the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action into view, creating a living work that will continue to evolve as progress is made.
 
Earlier this year, we sat down with Marissa to learn more about her work and perspective. We gathered some of her words on why the Calls to Action matter, what September 30th represents, and how we can each begin to take part in reconciliation.
 
And this is just part of the conversation. Keep an eye out for our full interview with Marissa, coming soon in the weeks ahead.

Harbourfront Centre’s main building at 235 Queens Quay West will be temporarily closed from October 5–18 while we complete a major phase of our energy retrofit project.
 
During this time, public access to the main building will be restricted, including the Ontario Science Centre at Harbourfront Centre and Boxcar Social. P2 parking will remain open, although occasional delays are possible.
 
The work is part of a larger project to replace aging infrastructure, improve building reliability and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50 per cent.

Sometimes we’re so used to moving through the city that we forget to really experience it.

But a city is more than its buildings, streets and busy schedules. It’s the people who fill it, and the moments that make us stop, get curious, slow down, have some fun, hear someone else’s story or see a familiar place a little differently.

Public art creates those moments, giving us something new to notice, question, enjoy or connect with, turning the places we pass through into places we participate in.

Reconciliation isn’t a moment.

It isn’t just one day on the calendar.

It’s an ongoing responsibility — one that requires learning, listening, accountability and action.

Residential schools were part of a broader system of colonial policies intended to assimilate Indigenous Peoples.

In 2008, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was established following the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. It heard testimony from Survivors and documented the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system. 
In 2015, the TRC released its final report and 94 Calls to Action — a framework for addressing the legacy of residential schools and advancing reconciliation.

The Calls to Action are specific, but their message is clear. We’ve pulled out some of the recurring priorities across the Calls and we encourage you to read the Calls themselves, learn from Indigenous voices and consider what reconciliation asks of you.

For Harbourfront Centre, reconciliation means continuing to work with, present and promote Indigenous artists and their practices while continuing to learn and examine our own role as an arts and cultural institution.
