We will be hosting a roundtable titled, “The Foundation for Prosperity: Secure Housing as a Catalyst for Economic Growth and Social Inclusion.”

This session will explore how secure housing drives both economic growth and social inclusion, drawing on international experiences and Canada’s evolving role in advancing global housing priorities.

It took just $15/month over the course of a year to help Dorothy in Uganda secure rights to her land.

Dorothy was living on land that she had no proof of legal claim. Like many women in the countries where we work, she could have been forced out at any time.

With support from Rooftops Canada and our local partner, her land was surveyed and an application submitted. She was granted a legal certificate proving it’s hers. Now she has security—and an asset a bank will recognize.

Rooftops Canada looks forward to participating in the 2026 Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) National Congress on Housing and Homelessness, taking place in St. John’s, NL, April 20–22.

Together with our partner Dorothy Baziwe, from Shelter and Settlements Alternatives Uganda (SSA), we’ll engage with leaders from across Canada’s community housing sector to share insights, explore innovations, and learn from one another.

Housing took centre stage at the 70th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, held at UN Headquarters in New York.

On March 18th, 2026, a virtual side event held during CSW70 focused on strengthening access to justice to advance women’s equitable rights to land and housing. Co-hosted by Rooftops Canada and the Habitat International Coalition (HIC), the session highlighted community-based practices alongside policy and legal frameworks aimed at protecting women's housing rights.

The event featured speakers from Rooftops Canada (Genevieve Drouin), HIC (Yolande Hendler and Diana Wachira), Development Workshop Angola (Allan Cain), Mazingira Institute Kenya (Laureen Odero), Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) Uganda (Dorothy Baziwe), and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) (Lauren Royston).

Nearly 50 participants from Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe, and the Middle East joined the discussion, contributing to a rich and globally inclusive exchange.

Andrea Adams, Executive Director at St. Clare’s Housing, recently completed a Technical Advisor assignment with Rooftops Canada and Shelter and Settlements Alternatives Uganda (SSA). Reflecting on her time in Uganda, she highlights the impactful work of the Women Spaces project and the value of meaningful knowledge exchange in advancing inclusive, community-led housing solutions globally.

Women in Johannesburg’s inner city often face violence, eviction, and discrimination that are overlooked in housing advocacy. The Women’s Desk, established with support from Rooftops Canada’s partner the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI), through the Women’s Spaces project, provides a safe, trusted space where women can seek advice, attend workshops on housing and legal rights, and access support services. The Desk is empowering women and helping residents navigate housing challenges with confidence.
