Over the last 7 years, at least 7 migrant farm workers have been killed or seriously injured on Niagara's roads. The close calls and near-misses are countless.

Migrant workers stand with unions and the right to strike.

This week, the federal government introduced Bill C-39. It lets the Labour Minister stop a strike. The government has used this power before to end strikes at railways and ports. C-39 makes it easier to use again.

The right to strike is protected by the Charter. The Supreme Court said so in 2015. Unions across the country, including CUPE, Unifor, the Teamsters and the Canadian Labour Congress, are fighting this bill.

Migrants know what happens when workers can't act together. Farmworkers in Ontario are banned from joining unions. Domestic workers are alone with their bosses. Workers on closed permits can be fired and sent home for speaking up. Last month in Calgary, police called CBSA on migrants at a protest. Ten now face deportation.

This is why we stand with all workers and unions opposing Bill C-39. Because an injury to one is an injury to all.

Two months ago today, migrant farm worker Sinhue Garcia was killed while riding his bike home in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Since then, migrant farm workers have been organizing for safer roads: meeting together to discuss solutions, participating in safety trainings, distributing safety vests to friends & co-workers, and engaging with municipal candidates to move them toward meaningful action.

👂 Did you hear? On August 13, Ford changed the rules on who can get provincial financial assistance - Ontario Works and ODSP - to explicitly exclude most migrants.

He claims this is to “protect taxpayer dollars,” while he and other MPPs spend public money on jets and luxuries. Migrants are being scapegoated once again - but we will not fall for it!

Seven years ago today, Zenaida, a young migrant mother from Mexico, died in hospital after being struck by a reckless driver in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

MWAC members gathered with community at a roadside vigil to demand safer roads, national housing standards, and permanent status for all. The town lowered its flag in Zenaida’s honour and promised to do better.

Seven years later, at least six more migrant farm workers have been killed or seriously injured on Niagara roads, most recently Sinhue Garcia.

Migrant farm workers are not disposable. They are our neighbours, friends, coworkers, and family.

“Syed Hussan, executive director of Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, said that in its current form the immigration system keeps most workers from ever achieving the ability to live in Canada on a long-term basis. ‘The people being pushed out are the same people Canada depends on to care for its aging population,’ he said.”

Nearly 40,000 migrant care workers have applied for permanent residency and have been waiting years for an update. Every year, the federal government has extended processing times, leaving many care workers in limbo. While they wait, many are losing their immigration status, putting their permanent residency applications at risk.

At the same time, Canada is facing a growing care crisis. As our population ages, the demand for in-home care, community care, and other care services continues to grow.

The solution is already here. Migrant care workers are already doing this essential work.
