Today’s Keynote Spotlight: James Swain! At the 19th World Congress on Infant Mental Health, attendees will hear from James Swain as he explores the neuroscience of caregiving, attachment, and recovery in parent-infant relationships. One essential takeaway from his work: parental brain circuits that balance care and defense in response to the infant are a central pathway through which risk is transmitted and recovery is made possible.

Key themes from the session include:
🔹 How sensitive caregiving supports healthy child development through real-time parent-infant attunement
🔹 The impact of maternal psychopathology, including opioid use disorder, on empathic engagement and neural circuitry
🔹 How interventions such as Mom Power can help restore empathic connection and support healthier parent-infant relationships

Join us at the 19th World Congress on Infant Mental Health, October 2–6, 2026 in Toronto, Canada, to learn from global leaders advancing infant and early mental health research, practice, and policy.

Early moments in the NICU are often made up of small interactions—quiet, meaningful, and deeply formative for both babies and their families.

The From the Heart NICU Resource Package was created to support these early relationships through practical tools designed for real-world, family-centred care. Developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals and parents with lived NICU experience, it brings together a parent booklet, NICU poster series, and implementation video.

We invite you to visit our website to learn more about the resources and explore the tools available.

We’re inviting primary care practitioners to complete a short survey on infant and early mental health in practice.

At Infant and Early Mental Health Promotion (IEMHP), we want to better understand how infant and early mental health is emerging in your work with children aged 0 to 3—what you’re noticing, what you’re supporting and what would help.

Primary care is often the first place families turn when experiencing concerns about a child’s development, behaviour, or emotional wellbeing. Early conversations can play a critical role in shaping how families navigate the early years.

The survey takes about five minutes to complete, with an optional additional section if you’d like to share more. You’ll be asked general demographic questions and reflections on your current practice.
