It was supposed to be a pre-wedding celebration. Then Israeli police ordered everyone on the ground.

The raid took place on Saturday evening in Umm al-Fahm, one of the largest Palestinian cities within the borders of Israel. Police set off stun grenades, brandished guns, and searched guests for illegal weapons.

They found nothing of the kind.

NIF’s Sam Greenberg explains: When it comes to protecting Israel’s Palestinian citizens and dismantling organized crime networks, Israeli police are nowhere to be found. Instead they are harassing Arab communities, using unnecessary force and causing unnecessary humiliation.

This is not what equality looks like. Equal citizenship means equal protection under the law, and equal treatment by law enforcement officials for everyone, Jewish and Palestinian.

On October 27, Israelis face a pivotal choice on their country’s future — and all citizens have a right to participate without being demonized for it.

But some in Israel’s government want to disqualify Arab parties from running and disenfranchise Arab voters. These moves would be totally warrantless, and based on nothing but racism and discrimination.

NIF’s Fida Nara Tabony says it plainly: you can’t talk about democracy and delegitimize a full one-fifth of the population.

From now until Election Day, we’re defending the right of every single citizen to participate, getting out the vote for groups that have been historically marginalized, and making all voices heard.

Arab voters are legitimate. The parties that represent them are legitimate. Full stop.

Last week, violent settlers set fire to homes in Tuba, a Palestinian village in the South Hebron Hills. Six people were injured — four of them children, ages five to ten.

This is the reality in the West Bank, supported by the highest levels of the Israeli government.

Canadian Jews cannot stay silent.

The tide is shifting.

A recent study from NIFC partner aChord: Social Psychology for Social Change showed that opposition to settler terror is now widespread in Israeli society.

A year ago today, Awdah Hathaleen, may his memory be a blessing, was murdered by a violent settler. He was 31.

Awdah was a light in this world, a man of warmth, wisdom, and integrity. He was a loving father of two. He died documenting settler terror.

Awdah was known for the enthusiasm with which he welcomed activists from around the world into his home in Umm al Khair. Our partners remember him for his kindness and for his strength in the struggle to stop the expulsion of his community.

NIFC is proud to support his legacy through the Awdah Library in Umm Al-Khair, where our Emergency Fund is helping facilitate a summer program for local youth. The library is named in his memory.

We honor Awdah’s memory by continuing the fight. Umm Al-Khair will never stand alone.

This kind of harassment is its own form of brutality.

No one is getting beaten up. Nothing is on fire. All the settler in this video has to do is to make his presence known, to remind the residents of Taybeh that he has the full weight of Israel’s security apparatus behind him. This is how extremist settlers use the occupation itself as a weapon to intimidate, to provoke, and to harass.

NIF’s Sam Greenberg explains: This video is a reminder that settler violence is not a fringe phenomenon but a system meant to drive Palestinian families from their land.

It’s also a reminder of why protective presence is crucial at this moment. Activists on the ground show up in partnership with Palestinian communities, disrupting the system and reminding them that the world is watching.

Hussam Abu Safiya has been held in an Israeli prison since December, 2024. Since his arrest, advocates have been deeply concerned about his condition. Two weeks ago, when his lawyer was finally allowed to visit him, their fears were confirmed. He reported that Dr. Abu Safiya had been beaten so severely that he struggled to speak and maintain consciousness.

NIF’s partner, Physicians for Human Rights Israel, has been fighting to get more information about Dr. Abu Safiya’s condition.

We demand answers. We demand accountability.

NIF Acting CEO has only lived in the US for a few months, but that’s long enough to know that the conversation in North America about Israel/Palestine is stuck on the wrong questions.
 
The pro-or-anti Israel binary is stuck. It flattens everything into labels, and it does nothing for the actual people whose lives are at stake.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya directed a hospital in Gaza. He was arrested in December 2024. He has never been charged with a crime.

Israel’s High Court has ordered the government to respond. Hundreds of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv this week demanding his release.

Accused or not, torture is a moral stain on any society. NIF’s partner Physicians for Human Rights Israel is fighting for answers. We stand with them.
