📸 Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Miles Nadal JCC for the opening of Israeli Testimony 26!
 
We were honoured to welcome exhibition curator Dana Wohlfeiler Lalkin and award-winning Haaretz photographer Tomer Appelbaum, who joined NIFC Executive Director Ben Murane for a powerful conversation about the images documenting Israel and the region’s defining moments of 2025.
 
From the return of the hostages and the protests that preceded it to the wars with Iran, the devastation in Gaza, and settler violence, the exhibition captures difficult realities that demand to be seen. Tomer shared insights into photographing protests and conflict zones, while Dana reflected on selecting just 100 photographs from nearly 10,000 submissions to the annual Local Testimony competition.
 
They also shared what gives them hope, including images of former hostages reunited with their families.

On October 7th, we remember all those who perished in the horrific attacks, the Israeli hostages who were killed in captivity, and the countless lives shattered by the brutal violence. This day devastated families –Jewish, Arab, immigrants, and foreign workers – across Israel. We share their grief and anguish today, three years later.

We also remember those killed in the catastrophic war that followed. We grieve for the tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza who lost their lives, their homes, and their communities.

Grief and compassion are not scarce resources. We can mourn both the massacre of October 7th and the devastation that came after – because both are true, and both demand to be reckoned with honestly.

Three years later, we are still recovering from October 7th. Israelis are still grieving the losses of that day and all that followed, even as they have endured many months of instability under rocket fire in continued wartime. In Gaza, the destruction is unimaginable and the rebuilding has barely begun. People are still living in harsh conditions and suffering immensely from continued Israeli attacks.

But we know the path forward. Because endless war, conflict, and violence do not lead anywhere but to more of the same. Only a sustainable peace can secure dignity, safety, and freedom for all Israelis and Palestinians.

The New Israel Fund of Canada and our partners are doing this work every single day, building a future without war and bloodshed, a future of equality and dignity for all of us, a future of peace. Today, we mark this terrible anniversary. Tomorrow, and every day after that, we work for something better.

Last week we saw yet another horrific attack by settlers against Palestinians, this time in the West Bank community of Jalud. It was only the latest example in the ongoing crisis of violence and forced displacement.

The NIF global community and our partners are bringing legal challenges against land seizures and demolitions; collecting, verifying, and publishing information about settler attacks so the world can bear witness; and providing medical care, protective presence, as well as fences, cameras, and flood lights to Palestinians on the front lines of settler violence.

They’re unarmed volunteers with Bnei Avraham, religious Jews who believe their Torah asks this of them. It’s hard to think of anything more Jewish. They came to build a life here because they love this place.

There is plenty to criticize with the Law of Return, but it was supposed to mean refuge for every Jew. Not just the ones with the right opinions.”

We are horrified by the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, on the eve of Yom Kippur — amid rising violence against the Canadian Jewish community and around the world.  
 
Our hearts are with the police officer who was injured protecting the congregation as well as with the synagogue community whose sacred evening of prayer was shattered by fear. We thank law enforcement for their swift response in preventing further harm.
 
Jews have the right to gather, pray, and live safely. We hope for a future of safety, dignity, and peace for every community.

NIFC is proud to once again bring to life Israeli Testimony: A Year Retrospective Through Photojournalism—a powerful collection of photographs and video documenting another year of profound moments in Israeli society.
 
On display at the Miles Nadal JCC in Toronto from October 1, 2026 through January 29, 2027, the exhibition is a curated selection from Local Testimony 2025, Israel’s leading annual photojournalism exhibition, held at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv.
