Some people are told they don't belong in certain spaces. Dr. Eugenia Addy, PhD was told science wasn't for her. Today, she holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toronto and leads an organization (Visions of Science) that has brought STEM programs to 1,500+ youth across the GTA.

She's proof that the people who dare to stay the course change everything, not just for themselves, but for the next generation.

This is part of our ongoing series celebrating Black Canadian entrepreneurs who are breaking barriers and showing what's possible. Because representation matters and so do the stories we tell.

At BlackNorth BEGIN, we believe every entrepreneur deserves the tools, resources, and community to build something great. That's why we exist to connect Black Canadian entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship, and opportunities to grow.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Mental health is deeply personal and can be influenced by many factors, including biology, lived experience, access to care, and the conditions people live, work, and build their lives within.

For many Black Canadians, socio-economic stressors such as income instability, housing insecurity, employment barriers, and limited access to culturally informed care can add pressure to everyday life and affect how easily people are able to seek support.

That is why equity must be addressed across multiple angles, from expanding access to career pathways, entrepreneurship, mentorship, and education to strengthening access to mental health resources.

This month, we’re sharing data and Canada-wide supports to help raise awareness and connect people to care including Canada-wide support from Kids Help Phone, Black Mental Health Canada and more.

Red Dress Day is a time to honour and remember the Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit+ people whose lives have been taken, and to recognize the ongoing violence that continues to impact Indigenous communities across Canada.

As an organization committed to confronting systemic inequity and advancing justice, BlackNorth Initiative stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, families, survivors, and advocates. Today, we reflect on the lives and stories behind every red dress, and on our shared responsibility to help build safer, more equitable communities.

May their lives and stories never be forgotten.

Mentorship is more than a conversation, it’s about equipping others with the tools, insight, and access needed to grow and succeed.

This week, we’re spotlighting Fisyan Sinyama, Manager, Investments & Product Management at IG Wealth Management, whose journey from Zambia to Canada reflects both global perspective and deep expertise in financial services.

Beyond her professional role, she has driven meaningful change as Co-Chair of the Black BRG & Advisory Council at IGM Financial, advancing inclusion and representation across the organization.

She also brings a powerful creative voice as the producer and host of Home Is Here! on Shaw Spotlight, amplifying diverse stories and perspectives.

We honour the life and legacy of Dr. Juliet Daniel, a pioneering scientist, professor, mentor, and advocate whose contributions to cancer biology left a lasting mark on molecular cancer research.

Through her groundbreaking identification and naming of the Kaiso gene, Dr. Daniel advanced scientific understanding in the field. Through her leadership, mentorship, and co-founding of the Canadian Black Scientist Network, she helped expand access, representation, and opportunity for Black and underrepresented scholars in STEM.

Her impact will continue to live on through the communities she strengthened, the scholars she mentored, and the more equitable future she helped make possible.

Our deepest condolences are with her family, friends, colleagues, students, and all those whose lives were touched by her brilliance, generosity, and leadership.

Behind every effective leader is someone ensuring everything runs with precision, structure, and accountability.

Through our Mentor Spotlight Series, we highlight the volunteers who are doing exactly that—bringing insight, experience, and practical guidance to the next generation of talent.

Today, we’re proud to recognize seasoned professional Gela McKie, with over 20 years of experience supporting C-level executives, senior leadership teams, and Boards of Trustees. With a career spanning defined benefit pension funds, investment banking, capital markets, and institutional sales and trading, they bring deep expertise shaped in high-performing, fast-paced environments.
Their work reflects a strong command of corporate governance, legal compliance, risk management, budget planning, and financial analysis—paired with the operational awareness needed to support leadership at the highest level.
