Please join us in congratulating our Board Director, Donette Chin-Loy Chang, on her appointment to the Order of Jamaica.

One of Jamaica's highest national honours, the Order of Jamaica recognizes individuals of exceptional national distinction and leadership.

Donette has been recognized for her contributions to nation building in Jamaica and Canada through her philanthropic efforts. As Chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University and a respected leader in governance and public service, she has dedicated her career to advancing institutional excellence, expanding access, and strengthening communities through service and philanthropy.

On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act took effect across the British Empire, ending centuries of legally sanctioned bo***ge. Emancipation Day stands as both a victory and a vow—a victory forged by the relentless courage of enslaved Africans and their descendants, and a vow to dismantle the systemic anti-Black racism that endures in Canada today.

We celebrate the brilliance, resilience, and leadership of Black Canadians who enrich every sector of our country. Yet commemoration must ignite action. Let us transform remembrance into resolve: confront injustice wherever it surfaces, elevate Black voices, and invest in opportunities that honour the sacrifices and aspirations of our ancestors.

A new chapter for the BlackNorth Pledge has begun.

Last week, the BlackNorth Initiative officially launched Pledge 2.0, bringing together leaders, partners and signatories for a Town Hall focused on the next phase of our collective commitment to advancing Black representation and opportunity across corporate Canada.

Since its introduction, the BlackNorth Pledge has challenged organizations to move beyond intention and toward measurable action. Pledge 2.0 builds on that foundation, incorporating what we have learned over the past several years and strengthening the framework for organizations committed to creating workplaces where Black Canadians can contribute, lead and thrive.

The Town Hall provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made, engage in important conversations about the work that remains and explore how greater accountability and sustained leadership can help drive meaningful, long-term change.

We extend our sincere thanks to Deloitte for hosting the Town Hall and supporting the launch of this next chapter.

We are also grateful to K**e Ojo-Thompson of MJY Advisory for guiding an important and thought-provoking conversation, and to Dan Manicom and Bain & Company for their strategic contributions to the development of Pledge 2.0 and its focus on actionable, measurable progress.

The event supports the Dr. Jean Augustine Professorship in Transformative Education and promises to be a thoughtful evening of conversation and community.

Thirty-two Scholars. Six years. One promise: talent will no longer wait for opportunity.

This week, 32 exceptional young Black Canadians from coast to coast walked into the University of Toronto as the inaugural cohort of the Vanguard Scholars Program, the start of a six-year journey of academic enrichment, mentorship, professional development, and leadership growth.

Here is the truth Vanguard was built on: talent exists in every community. Access does not. The networks, guidance, and support that open doors have never been evenly distributed. Vanguard Scholars exists to close that gap and to ensure Canada’s next generation of Black leaders has every tool their promise deserves.

At the opening ceremony, surrounded by families, faculty, partners, and community leaders, we heard the Scholars speak about the futures they are determined to build. The pride in that room was unmistakable. So was the certainty: these young people will lead.

None of this happens without vision. Our deepest gratitude to our Founding Partners, Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited and Northbridge Financial Corporation, whose six-year commitment made this possible, and to the University of Toronto, President Melanie Woodin, and the faculty, residence, and program teams who welcomed our Scholars with an experience worthy of their promise.
