But behind all the headlines, there are real people just trying to start over.

At Haven, we don’t pretend we can fix everything. What we can do is make it easier for newcomers to feel less alone — by connecting them with volunteers who help them practice English, ask questions, and feel a bit more at home here.

🚨Canada is cutting funding to many language programs.

That means fewer ways for newcomers to learn English or French, and fewer chances to fully participate in their new communities.

When formal programs disappear, community connection matters more.

Haven isn’t going to change federal policy (we’re good, but not that good). What we can do is make sure people aren’t left on their own to learn English and French while starting over.

A regular 30-minute call with a refugee can help them:
🗣️ Practice language skills
❓ Ask the “small” questions they’re too shy to ask elsewhere
🏠 Feel like they actually belong here
