Today, we pause to listen, learn and remember.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities who continue to carry their impacts.

For more than a century, residential schools operated across Canada, forcibly separating Indigenous children from their families and communities. The schools sought to erase Indigenous languages, cultures and identities, causing generations of lasting harm. The last federally run residential school closed in 1996.

September 30 was established as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2021, following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. It is a day to remember, listen to Survivors and Indigenous communities, and learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.

Truth comes before reconciliation. Today, and every day, we have a responsibility to keep learning and reflecting.
