“Representation means being seen for who we truly are - our stories, our struggles, and our strengths.” 💙
This Asian Heritage Month, we invited a few SickKids Patient Ambassador families to share a glimpse into how they celebrate and honour this meaningful time.
Though they each come from different communities and cultures, the importance of family and tradition connect them all.
Nila’s family: “Asian Heritage Month is a meaningful time for us to learn about other Asian cultures and celebrate the diversity and richness within the broader Asian community. We recently celebrated Tamil New Year by spending time with loved ones, preparing special meals, and visiting the temple to pray for a healthy and prosperous year ahead. Our culture is rooted in family, resilience, and tradition. There’s so much meaning behind the things we do, in the food we eat, the language we speak, and the way we celebrate.”
Adam & Ibrahim’s family: “We celebrate our culture through family time, food, and traditions. Eid is a special time for us to gather, dress in traditional clothes, and enjoy meals together. To us, representation means feeling seen and included. It’s important for children to grow up feeling proud of their background and culture. Family and community are at the heart of everything we do, and a lot of love is shared through food and togetherness.”
April’s family: “We celebrate by holding onto the traditions that shaped us - through Vietnamese food, family, and storytelling. I tell our children about the Vietnam war and how their grandparents escaped on a tiny boat so that their children could have a better future.
It’s in the simple moments: sharing meals, passing down values, and teaching my children where they come from. Vietnamese culture is rooted in resilience and love. There’s a quiet strength in everything we do - especially in how we show up for our families. Even in the hardest moments, that strength carries us forward, with hope and heart.”
