Happy ! 🧡✨ Today, we want to take a moment to celebrate Akilah Blackett, a true visionary and leader who has changed the lives of so many.

Three years ago, Akilah walked into Andron with just an idea—an idea that would soon become Afrika Outbound. She saw a need for Black youth to connect with their history in a meaningful way, to see themselves in the stories of resilience, strength, and brilliance that came before them. And because of her passion and dedication, over 60 young people have been able to experience something life-changing.

Akilah, your work, your heart, and your leadership continue to inspire us every day. You remind us that one person with a purpose can truly make an impact. Thank you for everything you do and for showing us what it means to uplift and empower the next generation.

Freedom is only possible through community.
‌
Without community, there would be no Underground Railroad, no settlements, no churches, no liberation.
‌
Josiah Henson risked his freedom to rescue over 100 enslaved people, then founded the Dawn Settlement, where Black families could live with dignity and self-determination.
‌
Mary Ann Shadd made history as the first Black woman in North America to publish and edit a newspaper, using The Provincial Freeman to advocate for Black self-reliance and amplify women’s voices.
‌
John Freeman Walls’ cabin became a sanctuary for freedom and community, where the Puce Baptist Church was born and Rosa Parks would later visit.
‌
Afrika Outbound honours these legacies by using history as a catalyst for connection and community building.
‌
At the heart of community is mutual respect, shared responsibility and the courage to stand together.
‌
We offer curriculum support and create experiential learning opportunities that connect students with Black history, community members, and knowledge keepers, prioritizing primary source learning.

A quaint town in southwestern Ontario, Chatham, was once home to one of Canada’s largest Black populations. By the mid-1800s, Black residents made up 60 to 80% of the community, earning it the title “The Black Mecca”. The thriving community included Black people from diverse professions, from teachers, lawyers, doctors, to hairdressers.
‌
During our visit, we learned of the heartwarming local story of a Black Canadian woman and a Japanese man who met while he was in an internment camp and who married after his release, demonstrating resilience and love across adversity.
‌
Thanks to organizations like The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society & Black Mecca Museum, visitors can hear about these stories through primary source learning. Dorothy, a descendant of the Underground Railroad, leads insightful tours, and we also met her delightful friend Olive, whose late husband lived to 101!
‌
Planning a visit? The Retro Suites Hotel is picture-perfect, or enjoy breakfast-included at the Comfort Inn.
‌
Plan your visit for this summer to honour and celebrate the stories that shaped this resilient community. Who’s going?

“The intentionality was key. Every time we ate, we supported Black-owned businesses, which I didn’t even fully realize until later. But looking back, that was an important piece of the experience.” 💬
‌
This reflection from a third-year participant speaks to the heart of what we do. From workshop meals to event spaces and professional services, we intentionally prioritize Black and small businesses to invest in growing our community’s economic capacity.
‌
Today, we’re shining a light on these incredible businesses and the important work they do. If you believe in supporting local entrepreneurs, LIKE and SHARE this post, spread the word, and let’s continue building together.
