We depend on the generosity of the public as we receive no funding for the work we do.

Well hello hoomans! 🐦‍⬛ It’s fledgling crow season 🙌
Please don’t mistaken this awkward stage as us being injured and kidnap us🙏
We might look like our parents and are often as big as they are too- but there are a few key differences that will help you identify us 🔍
✅biggest give away- our eyes are blue ( or greyish)
✅the corners of our mouth (gape) is still pinkish red
✅we often open our beaks and make a funny sound that is different than a typical adult ‘caw’
✅ our feathers are a duller matte black instead of the shiny purplish black of an adults feathers
✅ our tail feathers are often shorter than the adults
✅we are found sitting in odd places and often don’t seem afraid of humans - we may even open our beaks and beg for food ( but please don’t feed us!)
Mom and the family are rarely far away and keep an eye on us .
How to help us :
💥 Don’t feed us - mom the family take care of that.
💥Keep cats and dogs away from us - we can’t fly yet and they can hurt us!
💥if we are in a dangerous area like on a road or middle of a trail - just gently move us to the safety of the grass nearby
💥please don’t handle us as the oils from your hands can affect our feathers
💥 we are clumsy sometimes and may appear injured but we are just learning to fly and are awkward sometimes
💥IF we ARE injured ( a dropped wing, open wound, lethargic or unwell- or a cat or dog has had hold of us!) please call The Rock Wildlife Rescue 709-727-3101 and leave a message or text *
We eat a lot!!! So If you would like to help the rescue care for us until we are ready to be released - there are lots of ways to help !

Crows ♥️🐦‍⬛Oh how we love them !
We have a few here at the rescue with us now
Regrowing damaged feathers and recovering from injuries.
Incredibly smart, resourceful and inquisitive birds.

Some crows, need to overwinter with us to properly molt.
They have Big appetites and need proper nutrition to regrow healthy feathers.

Caring for these incredible quirky birds for months on end means:
• A steady supply of meat, whole prey, fish, vegetables, berries and supplements to help them grow strong
• Cleaning and maintaining enclosures to keep them healthy.
• Building proper habitats and with perches & enrichment to keep them challenged and engaged.

The calls don’t stop, and neither does the need.
Every day, more injured and orphaned wildlife come through our doors, and every single animal requires time, resources, and dedicated care.

Its that time of year again - its not just song birds nesting!
Gulls have been working on their nests too!
❗️GULLS ARE FEDERALLY PROTECTED UNDER THE MIGRATORY BIRD ACT❗️
The scoop on what you CAN and CANT do when it comes to Gull nests.
✅Best option ** leave it be and learn to co-exist with our Urban Wildlife.
✅IF there are no eggs in the nest - you CAN legally remove it.
❌IF there are eggs in the nest you can NOT interfere with the nest - you must contact Environment Canada Permitting office to apply for a permit to remove it.
❌IF the eggs have hatched and chicks are in the nest - You can NOT interfere with the nest, adults or chicks. (The likelihood of being issued a permit for removal are slim to none at this point!)
Ya missed the window !

TIPS : If you have to work in an area where a gull nest is located
▶️Keep as much distance as possible from the nest
▶️Use a heavy umbrella to cover your head so they cant make contact (we do this all the time when rescuing injured babies)
▶️Wear a hard hat
▶️Work in pairs so one person can keep an eye on protective parents and hold up a barrier
▶️Erect a tent to work under.
▶️ DO NOT chase them away from their nests or throw things at them - this is harassment of wildlife and is illegal !

Keep in mind these birds are not crazy ! They are fiercely protective of their babies and are being good parents. We are perceived as a threat (and for good reason, considering what we do to gulls and their nests!) We live in a coastal area and these gulls have adapted to sharing space with us. They aren't going anywhere !
The time for action is BEFORE eggs are laid.

** NOTE The Rock Wildlife Rescue does not remove nests.
