30 students (and parents) of St. Edward’s School in Conception Bay South, NL became proud Shavers last Friday! And they raised over $14,000 doing it! What a way to end the week!

Donations raised from Shaves like these support the important programs that we implement each year to help young adults living with, through, and beyond cancer. Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff at St. Edward’s who stepped up to participate, donate, and cheer on these brave Shavers!

“I've got 15 inches to donate and I'll be shaving what's left to raise funds and awareness for Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) and the young adults they support,” said Stampede Shaver Ange Cruz.

Ange is one of the incredible Shavers joining us at the Calgary Petroleum Club on July 2 for our fourth annual Calgary Stampede Shave for the Brave!

Ange’s $2,500 goal has a specific purpose, and she needs your help to make it a reality!

“$2,500 covers two weeks of YACC Chats, peer support for young adults from coast to coast to coast.”

YACC Chats are weekly peer-led virtual conversations offered over Zoom that provide a confidential and secure way for young adults affected by cancer to connect and support one another. YACC Chats are hosted by a team of trained and compassionate YACC leaders who prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment.

It is amazing folks like Ange Cruz who make these important programs like YACC Chats possible!

"I've always believed that if you can give back, you should," said 2026 Stampede Shaver Michael Wetherup. "The work that Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) does for young people navigating cancer is incredibly impactful, and this is my way to show support."

Michael sits on the Calgary Stampede board of directors, and he's leading the herd by example, putting his locks on the line at the fourth annual Stampede Shave! We're saddling up once again at the Calgary Petroleum Club on July 2, 2026 to celebrate another powerful chapter of this Shave tradition in support of YACC's mission!

"It is my hope that by participating in the Stampede Shave, it raises awareness around funding to support YACC and sparks conversation and encourages others to get involved in their own way."

We're only one month away, and Michael is already inching close to his $10,000 fundraising goal! Thank you, Michael, for your spirit and dedication to supporting young adults with, through, and beyond cancer!

"Just over a year ago my dad was diagnosed with cancer. My dad, Shane Kelly, was everything to me and my two brothers and my mom. My dad was a man of remarkable character, loving, compassionate, and had this infectious optimism throughout his illness that lifted those around him," said Solo Shaver Jonah Kelly. "He always had a story to share, a smile to comfort, and a sense of humour that filled the air with warmth and laughter. While his journey on this earth ended in August 2025, we will always keep his memory alive. I knew back when he was diagnosed I was going to do Shave for the Brave, I hoped it would be next to him, but I will do it now in honour of him."

A HUGE shoutout to Jonah for organizing a Solo Shave in honour of his dad, Shane Kelly. These incredible tributes and acts of bravery continue to fuel Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) and make sure support is there for young adults living with, through, and beyond cancer for many years to come! 💛

Thank you for having YACC's back!

We get to meet a lot of amazing people, and sometimes, we have to say goodbye to them too soon.

Jim O'Toole was a dedicated advocate, ambassador, and one of the best people around.

Here's what Geoff had to say:

I believe most people are good. Some are so much more than good. Jim was one of those.

I heard about Jim many times before we met. He reached out in 2013 to organized a Shave for the Brave with his firefighter buddies at the Central Station (pictured below, Jim is on the far left). Even over the phone, Jim’s enthusiasm and caring nature hit our Shave coordinator, Beth, so much that she repeatedly shared every interaction she had with Jim.

It was tough and ironic that he would later join the YACC community which he had previously supported so strongly. He was such a positive, supportive, thoughtful member of the community, just as he was in the rest of his life. Ours is the best community you never wanted to join, and losing YACCers like Jim is the toughest part of our work, we are grateful we get for the time and connection we get with these incredible spirits.

Jim, your impact on your family, friends, fellow firefighters, YACCers, people literally around the world, will be felt for the rest of their lives. We were honoured to have your back and grateful you had ours.

Always...
Live life. Love life.

And F**k cancer.

Geoff

From its headquarters in St. John’s, YACC has grown into a trusted national leader, connecting thousands of young adults through powerful, peer-based programs and building a community where no young adult faces cancer alone.
