In Canada, there at 8 million people (over 15 years of age) with a disability. Of those, 39% (or over 3 million) have a mental health related disability.

Yet in those members of the disability community who also belong to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, mental health disabilities are seen at a staggering 69.9%!

The importance of the impact of intersectionality cannot be ignored.

The disability community must acknowledge and advocate for our community members that face additional discrimination based on being members of other marginalized groups. And other marginalized groups must prioritize the inclusion of and accessibility for their disabled members.

Did you know that 684,090 disabled Canadians (over 15 years of age) are also part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community? That's 11.5% (versus 4.4% of the general population) if you're into the numbers.

This is important because it highlights the need for the disability community to ensure our spaces are safe and welcoming for 2SLGBTQIA+ disabled folks. It also emphasizes the need for accessibility at Pride events and withing 2SLGBTQIA+ spaces!

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

Pride Month is a reminder of the importance of intersectionality. Many people are part of more than one community. For example, a person may be both disabled and 2SLGBTQIA+. These identities and experiences can shape how people move through the world and the barriers they may face.

Building inclusive communities means recognizing and respecting all parts of a person's identity. Accessibility, inclusion, and belonging go hand in hand.

This Pride Month, we stand with 2SLGBTQIA+ people and reaffirm our commitment to creating communities where everyone is valued, respected, and able to participate fully.

As National AccessAbility Week comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who took time to learn, share, and take action for accessibility and inclusion.

We have made progress, but there is still important work ahead. Barriers continue to affect the daily lives of people with disabilities, and building a truly accessible and inclusive society takes ongoing commitment from all of us.

For now, we hope you take some time this weekend to rest, recharge, and enjoy the people and activities that matter most to you.

Next week, we'll continue the work of creating communities where everyone can participate, belong, and thrive.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend!

Building a strong, accessible Canada starts with the work we do every day.

At EmpowerNL, we support people with disabilities to live independently, participate fully in their communities, and have their voices heard. We work with businesses, organizations, and communities to remove barriers and create more accessible and inclusive spaces for everyone.

Accessibility is not just about access to buildings. It's about making sure everyone has equal opportunities to learn, work, connect, and contribute.

During National AccessAbility Week, we celebrate the progress that has been made and recommit to building a future where everyone belongs.

Together, we can build a stronger, more accessible Canada.πŸ’™
