💜 Celebrating Invisible Disability Week 💜

As we come to the end of Invisible Disability Week, Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes and celebrates everyone living with an invisible disability, including those living with epilepsy.

Not all disabilities are visible. Behind every smile, there may be challenges, uncertainties, and experiences that others cannot see. For people living with epilepsy, every day can look different, and the impact of seizures and other symptoms may not always be obvious to those around them.

This week, we encourage everyone to lead with kindness, listen without judgment, and remember that you never know what someone may be experiencing. 💜

Let’s continue to raise awareness, break down stigma, and build a more inclusive and understanding community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

Invisible doesn’t mean insignificant. Every experience matters. Every story deserves to be heard.

Today is

Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador is joining organizations and advocates in raising awareness, sharing resources, and starting important conversations about seizure safety and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

SUDEP Action Day is a special day which brings organizations and people together to raise awareness of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) and epilepsy deaths worldwide.

Launched by SUDEP Action on 23 October 2014 (as SUDEP Awareness Day), it shines a light on the largest cause of death in people with epilepsy, helping empower people through increased awareness, research and taking action to reduce epilepsy and SUDEP risks.

Not everyone with epilepsy is aware of or told about SUDEP and epilepsy risks, which can put them in danger of worsening seizures, injury or of dying prematurely. People with epilepsy & their families WANT to be told about SUDEP and epilepsy risks. Many bereaved families were NOT told about SUDEP & wish that this vital information had been shared as it might have saved their loved one’s life.

Every conversation matters. By spreading awareness, sharing knowledge, and taking action, we can work together to help prevent seizure-related deaths and support the epilepsy community.

💜 Epilepsy NL Family Scholarship 2026

The Epilepsy NL Family Scholarship, valued at $1000 is awarded to a student who has a family member (spouse, parent, child, legal guardian, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) diagnosed with epilepsy, and currently in, or about to enter, their first year of Post Secondary studies.

💜 Zach Rowe Memorial Scholarship 2026

The Zach Rowe Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1000 is awarded to a student with epilepsy currently in, or about to enter, their first year of Post Secondary studies. It honours Zach Rowe, recipient of an ENL scholarship in 2006, who passed away as a result of his seizures in 2009. He was 21 years old.

💜 Jim Hierlihy Memorial Scholarship 2026

The Jim Hierlihy Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1000, is awarded to a mature student with epilepsy who has taken the initiative to return to studies to advance in their present job or train for a new career. It honours one of ENL’s incredible volunteers, Jim Hierlihy, who was on the Executive of the ENL support group in Gander and a great supporter of all those living with seizures.

💜 Ben Basha Memorial Scholarship 2026

The Ben Basha Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student with epilepsy studying at a post secondary institution. Valued at $1000 it honour Ben, who passed away suddenly at the age of 19. Ben was many things to many people: night owl, practical joker, Ravens fan, ace tennis player, terrible driver, enthusiastic chair dancer, a committed university student, a fiercely loyal son, stepson, brother and friend. He went out of his way to offer help and comfort to anyone in need of it. His love for life was infectious and enriched the lives of everyone who knew him.

💜 Lucas Winsor Memorial Scholarship 2026

The Lucas Winsor Memorial Scholarship was established to honour the life, determination, and spirit of Lucas Winsor a long-standing member of the NL Epilepsy support community and a passionate believer in the power of education.

Lucas was an exceptional student who pursued learning in many forms. He began university with the goal of becoming a pharmacist, later earned his Red Seal as an automotive technician, and eventually returned to university to study Nautical Science with aspirations of becoming a Master Mariner. His educational journey reflects his courage to follow his interests, reinvent himself, and never let obstacles define him.

Lucas lived with epilepsy, and he firmly believed that no disability or challenge should prevent anyone from achieving their goals. His resilience, curiosity, and drive continue to inspire those who knew him. This scholarship carries forward his values by helping others access the education that empowers them to shape their own futures.

We have some exciting news to share!

Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador is thrilled to announce that we have been granted $10,000 from the Canada Post Community Foundation to support our Youth Epilepsy Education & Empowerment Project!

This funding means we can continue to increase our impact with the young people living with epilepsy throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, including rural and remote areas where epilepsy education, support, and resources may not typically be readily available

This project will help our youth create more opportunities for themselves to learn, grow, connect, and build confidence in managing their epilepsy, while also helping to educate families, schools, and communities in better supporting the young people in their lives living with epilepsy.

We are incredibly grateful to the Canada Post Community Foundation for their support and for helping us continue to make an impact for youth and families living with epilepsy throughout our province.

We have lots planned! More information about the project, upcoming resources, and opportunities to get involved will be shared in the coming months. Stay tuned!

H.O.B.S.C.O.T.C.H.
(Home Based Self-Management and Cognitive Training Changes Lives)

Is a 8 week long telehealth-accessible behavioral program that targets memory and attention problems in adults with epilepsy. The program is designed to help adults with seizures find ways to manage and cope with memory and thinking challenges in order to lead happier, more productive lives. The program is delivered in person or virtually.

What a busy summer for Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador! As we settle into a beautiful August, we just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all the organizations who reached out to us about our epilepsy information and seizure first-aid sessions this summer. With summer camps in full swing, we had quite the turnout for June/July with almost every single day booked up with sessions. And ALL those sessions were provided 100 percent FREE!💜

As we head into June I’d like to thank all of the organizations who reached out to us about our epilepsy information and seizure first-aid session! Every single day in May was booked up, sometimes even double booked, and all of those sessions were provided 100 percent FREE! It has been amazing meeting all of these people and organizations and just goes to show how big of a demand there is for this training! 💜
