Farm gleaning is a simple but powerful idea. Volunteers visit local farms to harvest surplus fruits and vegetables that might otherwise go to waste. Through gleaning, this food is recovered and shared with community organizations that support people experiencing food insecurity.
With a $4,000 grant from SPCF in 2025, LifeCycles Project Society was able to expand their program from 9 farms to 12 farms, strengthening relationships with local growers while increasing the amount of fresh food recovered across the region. The grant helped cover key program costs including transportation for volunteer gleaners, warehouse space used to coordinate harvests, and staff time for outreach to farmers. What connects SP-CF to zucchini races? πŸ₯’πŸ It turns out a small community grant can spark some big fun and learning.

With support from the Saanich Peninsula Community Foundation, the Victoria Community Food Hub Society turned summer festivals into hands-on food literacy experiences for Peninsula families. Think colouring pages, conversations about local farms, and yes… zucchini car races that got kids and parents talking about where their food comes from. Over 1,200 people joined in across three Flavour Trails events.

We are now accepting grant applications for projects that benefit Saanich Peninsula residents. If your organization is a registered charity with Canada Revenue Agency or a BC not-for-profit organization and has been in operation for at least one year - we can help!
Find out if your group is eligible: https://sp-cf.ca/grants/ The grant application is an easy online form. Application deadline is February 28, 2026.
Through our grants program, we support programs and activities that benefit the residents of the Saanich Peninsula, in health and social services; arts and culture; education; conservation; and recreation.
All applications are considered on merit and in light of funds available for distribution. In general, grants are not allocated to the same organization more than three times in five years.

Have you heard of Backpack Buddies?

They are an amazing BC non profit that feed vulnerable kids through the school system - via a take home β€˜backpack’ of food each week.

When Backpack Buddies applied for a grant from the Saanich Peninsula Community Foundation it was a natural fit and they received $4000.

Three of our board members toured the Backpack Buddies Saanich Peninsula warehouse today and presented the cheque.

Backpack Buddies help over 175 vulnerable children from low income families have food to take home every weekend. All right here on the Saanich Peninsula.

In photo are SPCF Board members Charlie, Darrell, Janis and Backpack Buddies founder Joanne.

We are grateful to have agencies like Backpack Buddies in our community helping our most vulnerable.
