We’re encouraged to see the federal government introduce the Safe Social Media Act, an important step toward better protecting children online, including from sexual exploitation.

The bill would require social media platforms to remove non-consensual intimate images and content that sexually victimizes a child, while also proposing account restrictions for users under 16. At the same time, it allows exemptions for platforms that are deemed to have strong safeguards for children.

This balanced approach aims to allow young people to enjoy the benefits of social media in an age-appropriate and safe way.

We’ll be watching closely as this bill moves through Parliament, and we’re grateful to see action being taken to put children’s safety first.

For 11 years now, the wonderful Fort Langley Lions Club has given to support prevention workshops for kids in their community. With their most recent donation, they have given $5,500 to help kids learn how to keep safe from sexual exploitation. THANK YOU so much!

In March, BC introduced significant changes to the Intimate Image Protection Act (IIPA) increasing the maximum damages victims can claim and stronger protection to their identity. These increased measures send a strong message that intimate-image abuse and sexual exploitation are taken very seriously and that offenders will face harsh legal consequences.

A recent investigation in Northern Ontario is shining a light on the growing dangers children and youth face online, including the rise of AI deepfakes. Cybertip.ca is reporting a 125% increase in reports of of AI-generated child abuse materials between 2022-2025.

As educators, parents, and community members, we all play a role in prevention. Conversations about online safety and grooming tactics are more important than ever.

What you can do: talk to your child about online safety and the apps they are using. Remind them that they can come to you if they need help. You can find tips on how to have these conversations on our website at https://www.childrenofthestreet.com/resources/

Remember! Online child sexual exploitation is a serious crime, even when it’s created using AI . If a youth is affected by online exploitation, contact Cybertip.ca or your local police department.

Today, on Child and Youth Mental Health Day, we recognize that mental health and safety go hand in hand, both online and offline. 💗

At Children of the Street, we know that online exploitation and unsafe digital experiences can have a serious impact on a young person’s mental health and well-being. Feelings of anxiety, fear, shame, isolation, and loss of trust can deeply affect children and youth.

Prevention starts with education, awareness, and connection. Young people are safer when they understand boundaries, recognize warning signs, and feel comfortable asking trusted adults for help.

Parents, caregivers, educators, and communities all play an important role. Open, judgment-free conversations can help children and youth feel supported, informed, and empowered to stay safe online.

Together, we can continue creating safer spaces where young people feel heard, protected, and supported. 💗

Join us on May 15 for an important conversation: Supporting Teen Boys in the Age of Online Influences.

The manosphere is having a big impact on teen boys, their wellbeing, and their attitudes and interactions with the girls, women, and gender-diverse people in their lives.

This free, in-person training brings together expert speakers and experienced facilitators to understand the root causes of this issue and how to reduce its effects on boys' mental-health and reduce gender-based violence.

Together, we’ll unpack:
• Why boys are vulnerable to these spaces
• The connection to mental health and gender-based violence
• Practical strategies for front-line professionals
• How to foster healthier, more positive conversations with youth

This event it open to everyone including: service providers, educators, health practitioners, and anyone working with youth.
