YES works to reduce and prevent homelessness by providing shelter, education and transitional supports for youth and families in the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County. In addition to emergency housing, we offer support to youth and families through:

Emergency food cupboard

Assistance with housing and employment searches

Life skills training

The Carriage House alternative classroom (in partnership with PCVS and the KPRDSB)

Vocational and educational programs (in partnership with other community services)

Indigenous youth are disproportionately experiencing homelessness in Canada - often experiencing homelessness at a far younger age than other populations.

YES works with Indigenous youth and families to divert them from homelessness. By working from a culturally focused lens, our Indigenous Case Manager is able to support folks through some of the hardest moments in their lives.

📣In From the Cold returns for its 27th annual performance in support of the YES Shelter for Youth and Families- an enchanting mix of traditional and contemporary seasonal music that you won't hear at any other Christmas concert.

Performers this year include folk quintet Carried Away, The Convivio Chorus, Curtis Driedger & friends, and special guest, the amazing Benj Rowland!

📣Ontario Trillium Foundation invests $40,700!

YES Shelter for Youth and Families has received a $40,700 Seed Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The grant is upgrading the systems, training and tools our staff use to help every young person and family who comes to us. That means faster help, fewer gaps and a quicker path to a safe, stable home.

📣 $40,700 OTF Grant from the Province of Ontario to help YES Shelter for Youth and Families - In late 2025, YES Shelter for Youth and Families received a $40,700 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), which is an agency of the Government of Ontario. The grant has enabled the upgrading of systems, training and tools YES staff use to respond to every young person and family who comes to them for help.

In 2025, as part of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, YES expanded our Indigenous RISE Program by adding a dedicated Indigenous Case Manager, providing culturally informed support for Indigenous youth and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

This past year, 15 Indigenous youth and 4 Indigenous families accessed individualized supports, including:

- Housing and shelter assistance
- Land-based learning, community kitchens and gardens
- Attendance at pow-wows and community meals
- Traditional medicines
- Transportation to home communities and status card appointments

We're also grateful for our growing relationships with Curve Lake First Nation, DBCFS, and the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, and look forward to building formal partnerships as we continue this work in the years ahead.

This program was initially made possible through Government of Canada's Reaching Home funding, distributed by United Way Peterborough & District. As funding priorities have shifted, Indigenous RISE is now entirely community-funded and sustained by the generosity of donors who believe in this work. On this World Homeless Day we hold space for all of those youth and families who are surviving homelessness, and we look to the future on how we can prevent, and intervene when someone is experiencing homelessness.

The Homeless Hub is one of the leaders in research on Canadian Homelessness - they believe that Canada has already built a substantial foundation for homelessness prevention.

YES currently offers several best-practise programs based on the concepts of prevention, diversion, and Family & Natural Supports. In 2025 alone, YES Diverted 45 young people from homelessness - we know that it works!

Real change happens when a young person is given the tools to build a future - and that's exactly what our RISE Transitional Housing Program is all about. Your monthly gift helps keep this program running and youth transitioning into permanent housing.

Through individualized case planning, life skills development, housing stabilization, and community connections, our dedicated housing team provided more than 5,850 hours of support in 2025 — helping youth move toward independence with confidence. 💛
