Building a greener future starts with skilled workers.

Through the Green Futures Partnership, SMART Canada is helping modernize apprenticeship training and advance sustainability and energy efficiency skills to build a stronger, greener future for Canada. 💪🇨🇦

Over the past few days, team members from Sheet Metal Workers & Roofers - SMART Canada, CBTU, SkillPlan, and the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC/SRSA) met in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to share the Green Futures Partnership’s progress and next steps in developing a national Green Certification while modernizing apprenticeship training. 🎉 Sponsor shoutout! 🎉
We're grateful to Sheet Metal Workers & Roofers - SMART Canada for joining us as sponsors for our 20th Anniversary Celebration next month in Halifax.
The union, which represents more than 17,000 skilled tradespeople working in sheet metal, roofing and siding across Canada, supports the development of Women Unlimited sisters and women in trades through hands-on activities during our free career exploration program. The union, in partnership with the Scotia Construction Sector Council, provides enhanced direct-entry training and career opportunities to Women Unlimited graduates and others across Nova Scotia.
So far this year, five Women Unlimited program grads and a woman in the WU network successfully completed this training in Sydney and Dartmouth.
Together, we're breaking down barriers and building communities.

This funding will strengthen our ability to train the next generation of skilled sheet metal workers and roofers in Thunder Bay and across Canada.

At the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers and Roofers Conference, delegates heard from Jack Wall, Director of Canadian Affairs, on the many benefits of SMART membership that go beyond wages and benefits. From free financial wellness training and member support programs to a new childcare platform launching in 2027, SMART is committed to helping members succeed both on and off the job.

Attendees also heard from Patrick Gordon, International Representative for Business Development, who highlighted the critical importance of organizing. As demand for skilled sheet metal workers and roofers continues to grow, organizing strengthens our industry, expands opportunities, and ensures we have the workforce needed to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

Being a SMART member means more than a paycheque. It means access to resources, support, and opportunities that help members build stronger careers, stronger families, and stronger communities.
