Nourish Project

Nourish Project Nourish offers a recipe for healthy, inclusive communities. Our recipe has four ingredients: to eat, cook, advocate, and grow.

The Nourish Project is a food-based collaborative that grew out of work initiated by the Peterborough Food Action Network. Built on strong partnerships, Nourish unites representatives from the not-for-profit, public and private sectors, as well as community members who are committed to fulfilling our collective vision and mission. We are part of a broad movement which seeks to give food more impor

tance in our communities, our economy, and our everyday lives. We seek to feed our region through a dynamic combination of innovative infrastructure, new connections and strong partnerships. Our ambitious project is dedicated to the creation of a dynamic network of places for food throughout Peterborough City and County where we can come together to gain a strong sense of belonging through growing, cooking, eating and enjoying good food. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its contribution to our work.

Community Gardeners are starting up reap the rewards of all their hard work in this wonderful harvest season! Please feel free to visit local and enjoy with your eyes, ears & nose, but please remember: ‘If you didn’t plant it, please don’t pick it!’
Most of our local community gardens are allotment plots, which means families & individuals work very hard to grow & maintain them and don’t want to come visit their plots to find someone else has picked their hard earned harvests!

🍎Peterborough is feeling fruitful!🍏

With incredible support from our Community Orchard Stewards, we want to share in the celebration of Peterborough's many orchards with you this summer.

Feeling fruity? Visit the orchard at Maple Ridge Park on Tuesday, July 4th between 4:30 and 6:00pm, where we will gather, appreciate and tend to the new growth of pear and apple trees in the city.

This Orchard Open House is interactive and all ages! Here are some fun things to expect on July 4th:

🍒 Volunteer and learn how to tend to the trees!
🍒 Learn about volunteer opportunities!
🍒 Sign up for our mailing list and join our Facebook group!
🍒 Paint a rock to add to the garden and orchards!
🍒 Have a treat!

Through the Growing Edible Infrastructure project, Nourish and GreenUP are able to partner and plant fruit trees and berry bushes in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough with the help of community volunteers. The aim of this project is to continue to invite people to participate in public spaces in new and nurturing ways.

Can't make it? Share a photo of you at an orchard in your stories or posts before July 20th and tag or to be entered into a draw for a $50 Boro gift card!

Drop in on Tuesday, or check out our event page here to RSVP and learn more: https://www.greenup.on.ca/event/growing-edible-infrastructure-summer-community-orchard-open-houses/

Wonderful visit to Whitefield Community Garden last evening. Big thanks to Percheron Plastic Inc for supporting the garden in getting a water tank to provide an additional water source for the gardens (They previously relied on a pump from a stream, that can dry up in droughts!) and to The City of Peterborough for providing the land, and the lovely new signage, and Public Works for ensuring the tanks stay full! The gardeners are very happy & the garden is growing great!

Gardeners: As you are likely aware, the is an Special Air Quality alert in place in our region due to high levels of smoke. We know it is time of year you want to be out in the garden, but please take the time to read the alert from the Weather Network (below), check in on one another and stay safe!

Stop outdoor activities and contact your health care provider if you or someone in your care experiences shortness of breath, wheezing (including asthma attacks), severe cough, dizziness or chest pains. Stay inside if you are feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms.

Keep your indoor air clean. Keep your doors and windows closed if the temperature in your home is comfortable. Use an air purifier with a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter in a room where you spend a lot of time. Avoid air purifiers that produce ozone. Check the filter and change it if required. For more information visit https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/healthy-living/using-portable-air-cleaner-wildfire-smoke.html.

Take a break from the smoke by temporarily relocating or finding a location in your community with clean, cool air such as a library, shopping mall or community centre. Contact your local health or municipal authorities for more information.

If you must spend time outdoors, a well-fitted respirator type mask (such as a NIOSH certified N95 or equivalent respirator) that does not allow air to pass through small openings between the mask and face, can help reduce your exposure to the fine particles in smoke. These fine particles generally pose the greatest risk to health. However, respirators do not reduce exposure to the gases in wildfire smoke. It is important to listen to your body and reduce or stop activities if you are experiencing symptoms.

Be sure to check on people in your care and those around you who may be more susceptible to smoke.

“[t]he vision being implemented through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund now is a two-tiered food system — affluent Canadians purchase premium products at supermarkets, farmers’ markets and designer food outlets, while millions of others line up to receive rations from volunteers working feverishly to distribute the food rejected from that retail system.”

Canada’s National Food Policy is slated for renewal later this year. Employment and Social Development Canada must be involved to develop income supports that reduce food insecurity.

“Why are we fighting for our basic human rights? Why are we fighting for a meal in a lineup? Why are we fighting for a place to stay? Why are we dealing with so much racism?”

Only 2 of the MMIWG inquiry’s 231 calls for justice are complete. Here's why that matters.
