The CMCF applauds today's launch of the Transportation and Supply Chain Workforce Alliance, bringing together employers, educators, labour organizations and Indigenous partners to address workforce challenges across road, rail, air, marine and warehousing.

Funded by the Government of Canada through Employment and Social Development Canada, the Alliance will focus on addressing critical labour shortages and representation gaps across Canada’s multimodal supply chains. By aligning training with employers’ evolving needs, it will support skills development, technology adoption and an overall stronger workforce.

The marine sector, which is experiencing significant labour and skills challenges is an important part of this national conversation, and we look forward to future collaboration to develop the talent Canada’s supply chains need.

The Canadian Marine Careers Foundation (CMCF) is pleased to announce that it has received $987,376 for the second year of its Shoring Up Ontario’s Marine Sector program, a major workforce development initiative designed to help job seekers and existing mariners in Ontario build rewarding marine careers, while helping fill critical labour gaps on domestic cargo and passenger vessels.

This Employment Ontario project is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Skills Development Fund.

The funding was part of a broader announcement today in Ottawa by David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, along with Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security.

Through its Shoring Up Ontario’s Marine Sector program, the CMCF and Georgian College’s Centre for Marine Training and Research will train 36 Ontarians for entry-level seafarer careers aboard Great Lakes-St. Lawrence vessels and upskill up to 60 current seafarers.

Good news for marine officers and employers: the online training course “Canadian Regulations for Officers” is now available in English.

Developed by the Comité sectoriel de main-d'oeuvre de l'industrie maritime (CSMOIM) in collaboration with the Collège de Rimouski, this training aims to help officers better navigate Canadian maritime regulations and the certification process with Transport Canada.

The training includes:

✅ 4 specialized learning paths for deck and marine engineering officers
✅ A 100% online format
✅ 60 days of access
✅ Availability in French and English

The addition of the English version allows more professionals, particularly international workers, to access this skills development and support tool.

*The purpose of this training is to support the authorized representative in assisting immigrant officers seeking recognition of their certification by Transport Canada, as well as officers seeking a higher certificate of competency and/or wishing to update their knowledge of Canadian regulations to facilitate their understanding of Canadian maritime law. However, it does not in any way relieve the authorized representative of their responsibility to ensure that the officer has a sufficient understanding of the applicable regulatory requirements.

Bonne nouvelle pour les officiers et les employeurs du secteur maritime : la formation en ligne « Réglementation canadienne pour officiers » est maintenant offerte en anglais.

Cette formation, développée par le Comité sectoriel de main-d'oeuvre de l'industrie maritime (CSMOIM) en collaboration avec le Collège de Rimouski, vise à aider les officiers à mieux s’y retrouver dans la réglementation maritime canadienne et dans le processus de certification auprès de Transports Canada.

La formation comprend :

✅ 4 parcours spécialisés pour les officiers de navigation et de génie mécanique de marine
✅ Un format 100 % en ligne
✅ Un accès pendant 60 jours
✅ Une disponibilité en français et en anglais

L’ajout de la version anglaise permet à un plus grand nombre de professionnels, notamment les travailleurs internationaux, d’accéder à cet outil d’accompagnement et de développement des compétences.

*Cette formation a comme objectif de soutenir le représentant autorisé dans l’accompagnement de l’officier issu de l’immigration désirant obtenir la reconnaissance d’une certification par Transports Canada ou l’officier en quête d’un brevet supérieur et/ou voulant mettre à jour ses connaissances sur la réglementation canadienne afin de faciliter son apprentissage du droit maritime canadien. Toutefois, elle ne libère en aucun cas le représentant autorisé de sa responsabilité de s’assurer que l’officier possède une compréhension suffisante des exigences réglementaires applicables.
