Canada-U.S. tariff update

New 50% U.S. Section 338 tariffs on approximately $28B of Canadian goods are now in effect, with Canada announcing dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning September 8.

Passenger and light truck vehicles and parts, along with medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and parts, are excluded from the new Section 338 tariff because they are already subject to separate Section 232 measures. However, some aftermarket products—including certain tools and equipment—may still be affected.

President Trump also posted today that tariffs on vehicles, automotive parts and steel would increase to 50% on January 1, 2027. This is currently a social media statement, not an implemented measure, and it remains unclear how it would interact with CUSMA and existing tariffs.

AIA Canada is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to share updates about what these developments could mean for Canada’s auto care sector and Canadian drivers.
