An empowered ombudsperson could help hold Canadian companies accountable for serious harm to human rights, workers, and the environment around the world.

But instead of responding to calls to strengthen the office, the government has left the position of Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise vacant.

Canadian companies are linked to the Rana Plaza building collapse, a preventable tragedy that killed over 1100 workers.

13 years later, Canada continues to fail impacted people. Our companies remain complicit in human rights abuses worldwide.

It is long past time for binding corporate accountability legislation.

An Ontario appeal court has dismissed a lawsuit against Barrick Gold connected to violent deaths and assaults in and near a mine in Tanzania.

Today, the UN Human Rights Committee "underscored its concern about allegations of human rights abuses and environmental harm linked to companies domiciled in Canada or operating under its jurisdiction".

The UNHRC called for legislation on mandatory human rights due diligence. It also recommended Canada "urgently" appoint a new Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) and empower the CORE to independently investigate.

GENEVA – The UN Human Rights Committee issued today its findings on Andorra, Canada, Chad, the Republic of Moldova, and Slovakia after examining the five States Parties during the latest session.
