The Ottawa WUDC 2027 Adjudication Core are pleased to announce the creation of The Steven Penner Memorial Award for Excellence in Adjudication, which will be awarded at Ottawa WUDC. This award honours the life and legacy of Steven Penner and the example he set through his coaching, judging, and mentorship. In memory of Steve’s commitment to excellence in competition and education across the global debate community, a gift of $10K CAD has been made to support travel and access to this event for accomplished adjudicators who do not otherwise have the financial means to attend. We are extremely grateful to Jim Penner, Steve’s father, for his support of WUDC and debate. As WUDC returns to Canada, we are humbled to be able to honor Steve’s legacy in debate in Canada, North America, and the world.
Steven debated for Hart House and was an accomplished speaker, winning Canadian Nationals (in multiple formats). He served on the Adjudication Core for Mexico WUDC 2018, as well as many other North American tournaments. He coached at Upper Canada College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In all of these roles, he is remembered not only for his competitive success and excellence in coaching and adjudication, but also his commitment to fairness, equity, and supporting those who have been disadvantaged. The world lost Steven in 2018 at an age far too young, but his influence lives on in those who knew him.
We are grateful to Brent Schmidt and Eric Barnes for their support in helping Jim establish this award over the past several months.
