A B.C. mom is turning unimaginable grief into a mission to help protect people from wildfire smoke after the passing of her son.

Her work is focused on raising awareness about the dangers of smoke exposure and helping people understand how to protect themselves when air quality becomes dangerous.

With wildfire smoke affecting communities across B.C., her message is especially important for families, seniors, children and anyone who may be more vulnerable to poor air quality.

One family’s loss is now helping bring attention to a risk many people don’t take seriously enough.

Have you ever had to change your plans because of wildfire smoke?

A B.C. mom wants to make wildfire smoke safer for kids. ❤️

More than three years after her nine-year-old son Carter died following an asthma attack exacerbated by wildfire smoke, Amber Vigh is calling on the federal government to expand Carter’s Project across Canada.

The project installs air quality monitors in communities that lack reliable local data, particularly rural and remote areas. Vigh says the nearest official monitor to her family in 100 Mile House was about 100 kilometres away when Carter died in 2023.

Since launching with the BC Lung Foundation, Carter’s Project has distributed 20 outdoor and 200 indoor air quality monitors, providing real-time information to more than 15,000 British Columbians.

Vigh has now launched a petition asking Ottawa to fund monitors across every province and territory so more Canadians can know what the air is actually like where they live.
